"Do you think the Weyr will ever be completed?" Thiseta was curled up on Aydhan's couch, a half-drunk glass of wine in one hand as she looked toward the window that led to Tymborikath's ledge. She was still amazed by the number of windows, and the smooth plaster on the walls, and the electric lights.
"Officially, it's completed. I like the idea of keeping it a Weyrhold though, myself." Aydhan said, "It's unique. There's smaller projects and upgrades bound to happen, but most houses are built and weyrs are dug into the rock. Quite nicely, too. Beats the rough hewn weyrs back in High Reaches." She refilled her glass and set the wine bottle back on the table. When she leaned back, the baby brown firelizard resting on the back of the couch leaned over to take a curious sniff.
Thiseta smiled and raised an unconscious hand toward the sleeping green firelizard curled around her shoulders. “Beats the ones at Windswept Islands Weyr too, and some of the northern Weyrs as well. And the _windows_.” Thiseta melted at the thought. “Such a luxury.”
"I don't know if I could go back to no windows." Aydhan agreed. "Being able to look out on the lake in the morning is wonderful. There's no reason you can't stay here, if Imbeth doesn't guarantee it. Faranth knows we could use more goldriders around here."
Thiseta’s smile softened as she relaxed into the couch. Aydhan was so different than so many of the goldriders she’d lived with a Windswept Islands Weyr. There had been too many of them to live comfortably, and the Weyr seemed to simmer with competition and gripes at times. No wonder Kapera had loved it at Barrier Lake. “Thank you. I… you’ve been very welcoming.”
"It's been isolating." Aydhan admitted, "It's always been, really, with so few of us compared to the rest of the wings. It's harder to forget dragon colour when you transfer in with a rank. I'd rather have a circle of friends that understand instead of making a competition out of something we can't control. And I think that keeps us safer in the long run, too."
“I do too. Windswept Islands wasn’t always like that, but I was stuck there so long... and it is nice to have friends, specially when you never know what enemies you might have made along the way.” Kapera certainly hadn’t known about Zaverin.
Aydhan straightened a little, curiosity taking over. "That's right, you knew Kapera from Windswept Islands. Did you know Zaverin, before all this?"
The goldrider hesitated. “I did. I was at Windswept Islands when he lost Euvimeth, and I was in the Infirmary when he was working there afterward. Teigan knew him better than I did.”
"I may ask Teigan, if you think he might be amenable to that." Aydhan said thoughtfully. "He was always brusque, but I didn't think he was dangerous. There are plenty of dragonless that go on to live long, fulfilling lives without attempting to murder a wingmate."
“He was never… unprofessional. But he wasn’t warm, either. But then again, not every healer is the same in how they deal with patients. And maybe I’m casting things in a different light now that we _know_…”
Aydhan nodded, swirling the wine in her glass as she considered Thiseta’s words. “Hindsight does that,” she admitted. “It colors everything. Things that might have been meaningless then suddenly feel like signs we missed.” She sighed and set her glass down, shifting slightly to stretch out her legs. The movement disturbed Dingus, who flicked his wings before settling again.
“It’s a very strange feeling to know that I’ve crossed paths with a murderer,” Thiseta said softly. “In a different time and place, it could have been me that caught his dragon, and me that was dead by his hand because of it.”
"You can't dwell on that. It'll eat you up." Aydhan said, "There's no way of knowing what would have happened. You and Imbeth are different than Kapera and Riyanth."
Thiseta shivered. “I know. So much of this is chance. Me or her. Or" you or I.”
“That’s the reality of our lives, isn’t it?” Aydhan said, "Threadfall, Weyrwoman flights, accidents. So much is outside of our control. We can do what we can, but we can't prepare for every situation. And we can't live our lives constantly looking over our shoulders."
“When I was told that Impressing a gold dragon would be a pain in the neck, they weren’t kidding. I"oops.” The green dragonet turned in her sleep and slid bonelessly down Thiseta’s front to land in a heap in her lap. “By the Egg, she is so _lazy_. Does yours do this?”
Aydhan laughed, "Citrine does, especially when she's decided it's breakfast time. Dingus has an overwhelming urge to supervise. And to keep at least one foot on me at all times."
“They’re worse than dragons,” Thiseta muttered. “At least yours has a name, unlike my little nobody.”
"I called him Trash Lizard so much he responds to that, too." Aydhan said, giggling when Dingus swiveled his head around to look at her. "It'll come. You'll find the right name for her eventually."
"You hear that, you little nobody?" Thiseta told her flit, "Just be patient, and maybe you'll be somebody soon." It was the same for her: she was still finding her place, but maybe if she stayed she could be someone here too.
