Description: Riyanth's last group of Weyrlings graduate to the fighting Wings.
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 6, day 1 of Turn 12
Notes: Mentioned: Riyanth, Kapera, J'nus, N'kevyn (not by name, see if you can find him, like Where's Waldo)
"We made it," K'lvin said to the Weyrlingstaff seated on either side of him at the table. The Dining Cavern was full of dragonriders, seated by Wings, waiting to see which of the Weyrlings would be placed with them.
It had been an unusual graduation process. With Riyanth's death and J'nus stepping away from Skybroom, there had been more conversation needed than usual to decide where to place the Weyrlings with so many leadership positions in flux. There had also been precious little to celebrate as the Weyr mourned the loss of Riyanth.
This group was not K'lvin's first group as Weyrlingmaster, but they had certainly been his largest and most challenging. While he was proud of them and thought they would do well in the fighting Wings, he'd lately been reconsidering his position. Being a Weyrlingmaster had seemed right at the time, but now, some three Turns later, he was beginning to think it was time to pass it on to someone else.
}:You should probably worry about that later,:{ Xmrenth butted in.
**Oh, right.** He stood and came around the table, which drew the attention of the gathered dragonriders who quieted.
"Thank you all for coming," he said, projecting his voice so that it carried around the cavern. "We," he gestured to himself and his staff, "are very proud of this group of Weyrlings. We believe they will all be assets to your Wings." A bit of emotion thickened his voice as he spoke. "This is Riyanth's final group of Weyrlings." His eyes scanned the faces of the Weyr's newest dragonriders. Some looked nervous, some excited, and others like they might puke. "May you all honor her memory, always."
The Weyrlingmaster cleared his throat.
"Weyrlings, if you'll please stand."
"First, the newest members of Ash Wing." The Weyrleader's table of wingriders perked up.
K'lvin began walking down the line, tapping the Weyrlings' shoulders, "A'radess of Bronze Tarvanneth, L'rin of Brown Yasanth, Casmari of Blue Sebiath, R'bain of Blue Brinolth, and Kailis of Green Chordath."
There was applause as the newly minted dragonriders walked to sit with Ash Wing.
"Next, the new wingriders of Skybroom Wing." A hush fell over the crowd again as they listened. "N'kayden of Brown Aberath." A male voice belted out "That's my boy!" as a dragon trumpeted loudly outside. There were a few chuckles. K'lvin continued, "Y'var of Brown Qitanath, V'dryn of Blue Zhomoth, J'cello of Green Bairelth, and H'taysh of Green Selkirth."
K'lvin turned and took a sip from his cup of wine while Skybroom Wing enveloped their new wingriders with slaps on the backs and mugs of ale.
"And then to Willow Wing," he said, looking at the remaining Weyrlings. "A'lin of Blue Oberlith and Ketlyn of Green Varinth."
D'kere whistled through his teeth shrilly in celebration before handing A'lin and Ketlyn their new shoulder knots, now signifying their place in the queen's Wing.
"Welcome to the best Wing in the Weyr, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise," the bronzerider said with a smile for A'lin and Ketlyn.
K'lvin retreated to the Weyrlingmasters' table as conversation resumed with a roar around the Dining Cavern. Drudges from the kitchens began filing out to place heaping platters of food on the service tables.
Once in his seat, K'lvin felt as if a huge weight had been lifted from his shoulders. They'd made it. They'd made it through another cycle without any casualties. Now he and the other Weyrlingmasters could take a breather for a few sevendays... Until the next set of eggs split on the sands. Faranth knew that would be here before they knew it.
