Aydhan

Aydhan

Tymborikath trumpeted a welcome as the other golds appeared over Barrier Lake Weyr. Aydhan smoothed out her dress and fixed her hair. She'd been looking forward to this day for weeks; she adored Rasme, but she missed having more goldriders around. It was lonely being just them and Kapera; now it was nearly isolating. And so she'd spent the better part of the day micromanaging the folks setting up the temporary quarters, and asking for klah and tea and snacks in her weyr for a welcome luncheon.

"Welcome to Barrier Lake!" She said cheerfully as they landed at the entrance to her ground-level weyr. Tymborikath, ever the lady, had already bullied Avicath away so there'd be plenty of room.

Imbeth crouched at the far end of the ledge as her rider stepped down from her back and took off her helmet. “Thank you for the invite, Aydhan,” Thiseta said. She patted her dragon’s elbow absently as she stepped forward to plant a kiss on Aydhan’s cheek. “I couldn’t believe how well the Weyr looks from the air. I’d heard all about it, but to see it in person… well!”

"Isn't it something?" Aydhan said proudly, "I love the lake. I'll give you both a tour once you've settled in. The Weyr proper used to be an abandoned mine, you know. The tunnels can be a little confusing at first."

“I’m sure. It must be quite the warren!” Thiseta had studied the few floorplans that had made it to Windswept Islands Weyr so she knew the general outline of the place, and she was already half-intimidated by it. The Weyr was a sprawling, gangly thing, but that might change now that she was here and she could see it for herself.

Agyta, still waiting for Valbath to shuffle her great bulk about, weaved straying strands back into a braid, and then stepped neatly to the other side of the ledge, admiring the view. “It’s certainly no rough diamond.” She also took in what could be seen of the Weyr’s inhabitants, permanent or otherwise. “And bustling. Are there always so many ships at port, Aydhan?”

"Not always. Tithes are coming in all at once today." Aydhan replied as she pulled Agyta into a quick hug and further into the weyr. "Tymborikath has been absolutely fascinated by the boats going in and out of harbor, which means I get a little preoccupied with it too."

She gestured for them to help themselves to the snacks and drinks. "I know goldriders aren't often on their best behavior when a Weyrwoman Flight is coming, but I'd rather not bother with that this time. I was only a 'Second for a few months before Riyanth passed. I'll be happy to go back to the Infirmary once it's all said and done."

“It’s a little daunting.” Agyta nodded, “Though I will say, less so knowing the Weyr has had capable hands steering it.” Plenty of people fumbled the reins in crisis. “Sometimes it’s just a relief a ship will float regardless of who’s at the helm.”

Pouring a hot mug of klah, her gaze immediately encircled a gaggle of taxidermied creatures. Stifflegged, wide-eyed. Plucked out of time, blue curls of steam cavorting before them like lost spirits. A look of consideration slid to Aydhan, paused. Slid to Thiseta. “In some ways I’m glad the final decision isn’t ours. My daughter insists it's ‘deranged’, so although the role isn’t to her taste,” Agyta smiled, “it is to mine.”

"It is wild that we're still deciding these things by _mating_ flights, of all things." Aydhan agreed, "The dragons don't have any sense of who'd be a good leader. That's not something Tymborikath has ever thought about mid-Flight."

“Nor Valbath.” Agyta rolled her eyes. “They have their own way of distinguishing what matters to them, and it’s rarely whoever sits on a sire’s neck.”

Thiseta thought about her weyrmate and wondered if he thought ‘deranged’ as well" both about the move and the way dragons chose a Weyrleader. “How old is your daughter?”

Agyta repeated the gesture, sardonic yet fond, “She’s sixteen.”

“A wise sixteen,” Thiseta said. “It is a strange custom we have, isn’t it. Tell me about the current Weyrleader here, Aydhan. D’hol. I’ve never met him.”

"We need to set up a playdate." Aydhan said. "My daughter just turned eighteen. I think they'd get along." And then, to Thiseta, "D'hol is a solid Weyrleader, from what I've seen. The Leadership has been mostly focused on Kapera and her rehabilitation, so I haven't had much chance to work with him. He's known to fly the Wings hard, but most folks seem to get along with him."

Thiseta nodded. “Poor Kapera. It was such a shock to hear what happened to Riyanth.”

Though she welcomed any chance to meet the man face to face, it was heartening that D'hol met the basic prerequisites. Then, slowly, at the mention of Riyanth, a muscle slid in Agyta's jaw. “It is,” she said softly, sipping her klah. “Has Kapera's condition changed much, Aydhan?”

"She's taking it slow." Aydhan said. "But she's here for now. And the incident itself appears to be a singular tragedy. Goldriders themselves aren't in danger at Barrier Lake. Not that that hasn't stopped my weyrmate from living in my shadow as much as he can."

Thiseta smiled wryly. “It did come up with my weyrmate as well when we were discussing a potential move.”

“It's not easy to think of much else when someone is lost,” Agyta agreed, “especially when it comes at the hand of one of our own.”

Aydhan nodded and shot Thiseta a bemused but knowing look, "I hope your weyrmate has a job or a hobby. Not that N'kevyn looming three paces behind me hasn't been entertaining. The important thing is that you are both safe at Barrier Lake. Although, I think this would be a nice segue into a little weyrwarming present for you both, for even considering coming down here despite everything." Aydhan rose again from her seat and left for a moment, reappearing with a large, fancy container. She removed the lid to show, half submerged in sand, a clutch of firelizard eggs.

"My family made off with a clutch of eggs, and there is no way we're going to be able to care for them all. Please, pick one. Said weyrmate has cultivated quite the collection of suitable jars and sand, so you'll have everything you need until it hatches. Although I understand if you aren't a pet person."

“Oh!” Thiseta’s brown eyes were bright as she looked at the speckled eggs. “I forget how tiny flit eggs are. This is so thoughtful of you, Aydhan! Thank you.”

Agyta leaned to peer into the container too, a soft inhale for the new life. “Faranth, they are tiny. You know, I've got a twelve turn old and seventeen turn old waiting as well. There'll be a fight worthy of Thread if I bring one of these home,” she said even as two fingertips gingerly brushed a warm beige shell. Then, glancing up, “Yes, thank you, Aydhan.”

"It could always be a family pet." Aydhan suggested, "Though that wouldn't work with my kids, either. The offer is open if you change your mind, Agy. Any egg is fine, except the gold one." And Aydhan would have to convince Aydhara that there would certainly be a blue amongst the remaining clutch.

"Now, do you two have any preference on what very interesting and not at all bland tasks it takes to keep this Weyr running?"

“You’ve been so generous already, but I may just have to. It’ll be a good tactic to get them here if it comes to it,” and a new companion to raise if it didn’t. Agyta straightened, fixing her hair subtly at the thought. “No preference here. It’s all not very bland to me. Thiseta, dear, you’ll have to be the tie breaker.”

Thiseta laughed. “I can do that,” she said.
