Writers: Heather, Shawna
Date Posted: 20th February 2025

Characters: K'lvin, Viseya
Description: K’lvin is bored while the Weyrlings are taking a test and decides to catch up on some ‘leisurely reading’
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Date: month 3, day 19 of Turn 12

K’lvin hated test days. He much preferred drills, exercises, chores, _anything_ but sitting in a classroom staring at the Weyrlings as they slowly completed training questions. He had glanced at the time piece on the wall at least five times and he swore only two minutes had passed. How was that even possible?

Cracking open the desk drawer, he withdrew the small, paperback novel he’d placed in there earlier. Glancing at the Weyrlings to make sure they were all on task, he casually opened the book on his knee - keeping it hidden behind the desk - and cracked it open. He’d already read the first two chapters last night, and was just getting to an interesting part….

/Her heart thundered as his hand brushed against her shoulder, and she dared to glance up at him. He was smirking, that grin that made her stomach flutter and her thoughts scatter like confetti. Her breath caught in her throat and she felt a trickle of sweat run down her collar. Did he keep his office overly warm… or was that just him? /

A cough in the room made K’lvin’s head snap up. His eyes narrowed as he watched N’kayden stretching and looking around. **Trying to cheat?** he wondered, but the brown Weyrling’s eyes never landed on anyone else’s paper before he rolled his neck and tucked back into his work.

The Weyrlingmaster gave it another heartbeat before he tilted his head back down to the book….

/She tried to ignore the thumping in her heart, but realized she’d ignored answering a question. “Oh yes, I have the copies of the next lesson plans here.”

“Oh good,” he said, “I can’t abide tardiness.”

It made her tempted to ask him what he would do to a tardy subordinate. She could think of more than a few things he could do to her. Wondered just how late she would have to be to earn a good… tongue lashing. Oh or perhaps a spanking. She felt the flush on her cheeks at the thought. /

A throat cleared in the classroom and K’lvin nearly jumped out of his own skin.

“Ehem, sir?” It was Casmari with her hand raised. K’lvin wondered how long she’d been sitting there with her hand raised waiting for him to notice.

The back of his neck felt warm.

“Uh, yeah? What is it?”

“On question number fourteen, it says ‘At what altitude is _breast_ for catching a falling rider’... Is that supposed to be ‘_best_’?” The blue Weyrling tilted her head to the side, even as a few other Weyrlings snickered behind their hands.

“Ah, yes, it is _best_, probably just a miscopy from the apprentices,” K’lvin confirmed with a straight face.

The blonde Weyrling turned her head back down to her work and quiet once again settled around the room.

Propping his book open on his leg once more, K’lvin took up a stylus in one hand and moved a hide closer with his left, to give the illusion that he was looking down at his ‘work.’

**Now, where was I?** He scanned down the page

/She needed to get out of there, to escape this stuffy little office before she said something inappropriate. Or worse, did something inappropriate. She’d worked hard for this promotion. She couldn’t ruin that, no matter how much she wanted to drag him down by the shirt and see if his lips were as hot as this room felt.

“If there’s nothing else I can do for you,” she let her voice trail off, catching his gaze on her parted lips. The air between them was tense, heavy like those last few moments before a storm broke. That storm had been building for so long, she was almost afraid of what would happen when it broke.

Her nerve breaking, she stood abruptly, heading for the door. The familiar uneven click of her heels on the floor echoed behind her./

The click of boots on the floor was suddenly real. “-the interruption, but I just wanted to drop off the reports from the healers. Our little accident earlier just resulted in some minor sprains. The Weyrlings are cleared for training.” Viseya was suddenly standing in front of his desk with a few pieces of hidework. She had an easy smile, and clearly had been talking for a moment. “I figured it would give you some reading material while you supervised.”

K’lvin’s heart was all but frozen in his chest. Had he not experienced a real heart attack Turns prior, he would have thought it was happening again. Instead, he engaged Viseya in conversation, hoping to distract her attention, as he casually closed the novel and stuffed it in his desk drawer. Shells, was he _sweating_?

“Ah, y-yes. Reading material. That would be perfect.” He took the files she was handing to him.

Viseya might not have noticed the book, but she did notice the sound of a drawer being pushed shut, and she raised an eyebrow curiously. “Are you feeling alright, sir? I could sit in for the rest of the test if you need. You look a little flushed.”

“Oh no.. it’s not… I’m fine.” He peered around her to glare at Kailis and Ketlyn, sure he had seen them whispering. “It’s just a little stuffy in here today. Thank you, Viseya.” The words were coming easier now that his pulse had slowed a bit.

The eyebrow somehow went up even farther, but she just nodded, “Got it. I’ll get back to what I was doing then. Happing testing,” she said in barely more than a whisper before turning to head back out of the room. The click of her boots was loud in the quiet room, even with the slight uneven shuffle from her slight limp.

**Whew.** Relief trickled down his spine.
