Timassa

Timassa

Practice had been canceled that day. The Weyr seemed draped in grey, with dragons huddled in sunbeams for a warmth that they could no longer find now that Riyanth was gone.

The same could be said for Ash Wing, as people drifted in and out of the Dining Hall. Y'rim spotted Timassa at their table and sat across from her. "This is just awful," he said miserably without preamble.

"Yeah," she said sadly, just poking at her food without really eating. "We're all feeling our dragon's grief. How are you doing?"

"Oh, I've definitely been better," Y'rim answered, trying to sound cheerful or resilient or anything other than wallowing in sadness. He obviously failed at it. "Quir hasn't wanted to move a muscle. She's curled up around Abaroath and Iskandreth like some green and blue braided bread." Any other time, it would have been adorable and Y'rim would have laughed. Today, it just cemented how badly everyone was clinging to each other.

"Yeah," she said again and realized they were in the same boat. "Saryolth is grieving... well for as long as she remembers. Yumath will take longer. But he has her snugged under his wing." She gave him a sad smile. "No dragon death is ever easy but this...," she shook her head. "This was pointless."

"It was _awful_," Y'rim replied with a vehement hiss. His normally whimsical, sanguine personality took on a darker form for a moment. "Attacking the Weyrwoman in her own weyr? There isn't justice enough to atone for that. They caught the attacker, right? Is that what Quiroanth heard?"

"Yes," she nodded slowly. She wasn't sure how much she should share. D'hol knew of course but she didn't want to say that J'nus had almost killed the man who'd attacked Kapera. "It wasn't pretty... J'nus caught him in the act and probably saved her life **Just not in time to save Riyanth.** A tear dropped onto her cheek and she dashed it away.

"Good," Y'rim answered, letting that anger flow through his wiry frame. "I hope they leave him out for Thread to eat. Slowly. How could someone do that! Did they say why? Who? Oooooh, don't let me get my hands on them either!"

She snorted and shook her head. "I'm sure that J'nus and D'hol are ahead of you in line there," she said gently. "I don't know what's going to happen with Kapera... she... she hasn't woken up yet."

Hearing that from his Wingthird blew a lot of the vitriol out of him. Y'rim remembered that awful moment a few Turns ago when he thought that Quiroanth would be grounded forever. At least he would have still _had_ her but....

The wiry greenrider looked away. "I can't imagine it," he said in a small, terrified voice. To lose one's dragon! It was...unspeakable! Y'rim could not think of his life without Quiroanth. "What...she can't be Weyrwoman now, can she?" he asked. It was mostly an already answered question -- no dragonless person could lead a Weyr -- but Y'rim just still couldn't fathom Kapera _not_ leading Barrier Lake. "What are we going to _do_?" he quietly wailed.

Timassa reached out and covered the green rider's hand with her own, "We're going to wait for the first gold to rise. Her rider will be our new Weyrwoman," she said simply. "There is nothing else to do other than fight Thread as we always do. We will do our jobs."

Y'rim chewed on his lower lip. "But...that could be _months_, Timassa," he said. "Is...oh, poor Aydhan. She's going to have so much to handle."

"Yes," Timassa smiled. "But it's the same job she'd be doing if her gold rises first. So, who knows how long it will take?" Timassa shrugged. "We've got one who's experienced to handle things until then. We're going to be fine." She just hoped the same could be said of Kapera.
