Finding experienced Weyrlingstaff had already been difficult before, but since Riyanth’s passing, well, dragonriders weren’t exactly lining up at the door to transfer to Barrier Lake. When the name “Viseya” came across his desk it triggered old memories of a freckled-face, boney-kneed little girl at River Bluff Weyr. But that had been Turns and Turns ago and K’lvin had no idea if the “Viseya” scratched onto this hide was the same as the little girl from River Bluff.

Nevertheless, the credentials looked good, and a woman on staff could be essential when it came to dealing with some of the female Weyrlings. K’lvin’s mind jumped to a couple in particular who could be extra difficult.

}:Cholsinth’s rider is here.:{ Xmrenth relayed helpfully.

**Perfect,** K’lvin said, looking down at his desk again to straighten up his hides and papers.

Having greeted Xmrenth on the way in, Viseya gave no more than a perfunctory knock before entering. “Good afternoon. You wanted to speak to me?” Her eyes flicked towards the hidework on his desk before focusing back on his face. She had a good idea what this was about; she’d been the one to approach Aydhan about her interests and qualifications, hoping the goldrider would pass the recommendation on as her acting wingleader. Her stance was somewhere between relaxed and at attention, hands clasped behind her back, and she’d even given her boots a nice polish that morning so she looked her most respectable. She recognized K’lvin of course, but he’d just been any other bronzerider when they’d both been at River Bluff, not anyone she knew well enough to use the connection as leverage. “I suppose this is about the open position on your staff?”

K’lvin’s eyes started at Viseya’s boots and swept upwards until they landed on her face. **Whoa.** She was no longer the knobby-kneed little girl he remembered. **Of course she isn’t, it’s been decades.** Viseya had certainly developed into a beautiful woman.

}:She’s going to think you’re strange if you don’t say something.:{ Xmrenth pointed out helpfully.

“Ah, yes, sorry, it is. Please, take a seat,” he gestured to a chair in front of his desk.

Viseya had been starting to feel uncomfortable under the intense scrutiny when he finally broke the silence. Sinking down into the chair, she found she was having a little trouble meeting his gaze, her eyes flitting around in something almost like nerves. Annoyed at herself fretting like a student sitting in this chair, she took a breath and made herself meet the stare that felt uncomfortably intense. “I assume you’ve seen my record. I was harper trained. The useful kind in this case- I assumed I’d be teaching the weyrbrats how to read one day. At River Bluff, actually, though I’m sure you wouldn’t have noticed me when you were there.” She dragged her gaze back up from his stubbled jawline back to his eyes through force of will.

“Actually,” K’lvin found himself admitting, “when I saw your name I was immediately taken back to the mental image of a little girl with freckles. You’ve grown up, and I’ve grown old,” he smiled. “As for your harper background, I do think that will be extremely handy. My ‘second has mindhealer training, you have harper training, and I was a Wingleader. I feel like the three of us would be able to meet most of the Weyrlings' needs with our experience.”

That was so much worse than not remembering her at all. “I assure you. I left the little girl with the freckles behind a lifetime ago,” Viseya knew she was flushing in embarrassment, but she couldn’t stop it, so she just tried to push through. “It also wouldn’t hurt to have a woman on the staff, for any of the weyrlings who wouldn’t feel comfortable talking to you or J’nic.” A hint of a smile twisted one corner of her mouth, and she admitted, “I rather expected I’d have to do more convincing you.”

Yes, she certainly _had_ left that little girl with freckles behind, K’lvin thought.

“Anyone who has Turns of dragonriding experience that suddenly wants to impart some of that wisdom and time onto the Weyrlings will never have to convince me. People don’t typically line up at my door when it comes to working with hormone-filled teenagers on emotionally-questionable dragons.”

“Well, not if you’re selling the job like that. I won’t say I’ve gotten bored, exactly, but it was time for a change of pace, and I figure after two decades I probably have a little wisdom to pass on.” Wryly, she added, “And it beats moving. Dragonsfall is too cold and Dolphin Cove has too much sand.” She cut herself off before adding that either would bother her leg; now wasn’t the time to point out any flaws. “Did you have any questions for me, or should I just ask you when I should start? You’ve got the current batch well in hand from what I’ve seen, but I’m ready to jump in whenever.”

K’lvin’s mouth twisted as he fought off a full blown laugh. **Well in hand? Thank Faranth someone thinks so.**

“We’ll be starting their first jumps /between/ next week. I know that’s an intense lesson to join in on, but we could use the extra hands if you’d like.”

“I don’t mind jumping right in"between or otherwise. Just tell me where you want me,” Viseya said. “And I’ve been told I’m quite good with my hands"comes with the territory of a greenrider, don’t you think? Quick reflexes and all.”

His eyes glanced at her hands. He believed that she was probably _very_ good with them. There were lots of places he could want her, his brain thought quickly. The desk. Draped over that chair. His bed.

**Good grief,** he thought to himself, wondering what had suddenly come over him. K’lvin hadn’t had such a reaction to a woman in… a while. Especially after Riveenata.

“Let’s have you join in on that lesson then,” he agreed, his voice just as polite and neutral as ever despite his whirling thoughts. Opening his desk drawer, the Weyrlingmaster pulled out a pair of rank knots and handed them to Viseya over his desk. “Welcome to the team.”

Taking the knots, Viseya stood. “Thank you, sir. I think you’ll be pleased by my performance under you.” She heard what she’d said a moment after she said it and quickly turned around and left, lest she find herself blushing again. That certainly wouldn’t inspire confidence.
