Aydhara

The sevendays slipped by so quickly Ketlyn wasn't sure that she'd been awake for any of it. It wasn't until she saw Aydhara across the Dining Cavern one evening that Ketlyn realized how long it had been since she'd seen her friends, and then was promptly swamped by guilt because of it. Biting her lip, Ketlyn changed course and slid into the seat across from Aydhara's. "Hi."

Aydhara looked up in time to see Ketlyn sliding into the seat across from her, and her expression broke into a smile. She'd missed her friend, even moreso that Ketlyn was yet another friend that went off and Impressed without her. "Hey! Um..how's Varinth?"

"She's good. Um. How are you?"

"I'm fine." That was mostly true. "Dad took me to see the Dolphin Hall show for Turn's End. I got to meet one of the dolphins."

"Really? That's so neat!" This seemed like a safe topic for conversation. "I miss Dolphin Cove Weyr and being able to go swim with the dolphins. Who did you meet?"

"Tib! He was really friendly. I couldn't tell which one was him once the show started. Oriene and Cirina introduced him to me- they're both candidates at Dolphin Cove. Do you know them?"

Ketlyn tipped her head to one side as she thought, then shook her head. "I don't think I've met Oriene, but I think I remember Cirina. She's got red hair, right? I was only at Dolphin Cove Weyr for less than a Turn before I came here."

"Oriene was a Dolphineer apprentice before she was Searched, I think." Aydhara said, though there was so much bad wine that she couldn't remember the finer details. "Yes, that's Cirina! She has a brown firelizard, too. She showed up _riding_ a brown dragon and I nearly had a heart attack. It was one of the weyrlings without his rider."

The weyrling's eyes went wide. "No way! She was riding someone else's dragon!? Not as a passenger?"

"Yeah! He brought her down to the Dolphin Hall. Avicath takes me for rides sometimes, but not that far. She said she helped his rider when he first hatched, so I guess it's a special situation. I almost turned on Dad for not telling me that a girl Impressed a brown."

"Oh wow, could you imagine? As if the Weyr could keep that a secret. Everyone's already talking about Casmari and that other girl from Dragonsfall Weyr."

"Kadira." Aydhara said primly. She was keeping track. "And there's a new girl that Impressed at Dolphin cove, too. Tirraze. Do you know her? Oriene and Cirina do. They said they'd introduce me if I visit again."

Ketlyn shook her head. "I don't know her. When are you going to go back to Dolphin Cove Weyr?"

Aydhara shrugged. "I dunno. Soon, I hope, but I have to wait for someone to bring me. Cirina and I have been sending letters back and forth with her firelizard. Maybe I can convince Dad to bring me again; I saw him dancing with the new Weyrwoman Second. He could go visit, too."

They were a strange family, Ketlyn thought. But she was Holdbred and had no right to judge how dragonrider families lived, especially when Aydhara's parents rode gold and bronze dragons. "I'd go back to Dolphin Cove with you, once I'm able to go /between/ with Varinth." She bit her lip, realizing belatedly that she might have touched on a sore spot. "Or your brother could take you on Aberath. We'll be cleared to travel at the same time."

Aydhara made a face at the mention of her brother. He'd probably tease her about visiting her girlfriend. Or try to shoot his shot, and she didn't know which one was worse. "Maybe once things have settled down we can go visit." She said. "I have a lot of people at Dolphin Cove for you and Varinth to meet."

"I'd like that." Ketlyn bit her lip and then leaned forward a bit. "I wish you'd Impressed at the same time I did."

Aydhara sighed. "Me too. But hopefully this is the last time my friends Impress before me. And besides, that means you and Nik can help me when I'm finally a weyrling."

"Better be next Hatching." Ketlyn arched an eyebrow. "Don't leave me alone in the Wings."

"Pff, of course not. I'll get there." Aydhara said with perhaps a little too much confidence. "Everyone else has Impressed. I will too."

"I know." Ketlyn looked at the clock on the wall and winced. "I should go before I get in trouble for being late... but if you're free the next restday, we could maybe do something together...?"

Aydhara brightened, "I'd love that!" She began to stand, collecting her empty tray. "I can walk you back to the barracks too, if you don't mind the company. And I can make a show at showing off my new belt knife if I see H'taysh. You know what that jerk said to me when I was visiting N'kayden?"
