When Can I Start?

Cithara

Cithara

After managing to convince her father that transferring was a good
idea, Lindora did not waste any time. On her break, she made the walk
from the Harper Hall to the Printer Hall and asked one of the workers
for directions to the Headwoman's office. The door was closed and she
did not hear any voices from within, which was not a promising sign.
However, she knocked and then took a step back to wait.

Cithara, who had been jotting something in her leather-bound journal,
closed the book, wrapped the leather string that held it shut back
around it, and shoved it away in her desk drawer.

"Come in," she called.

Lindora entered and gave a quick curtsy. "Hello, Headwoman. I'm
Lindora. I currently work in the Harper Hall kitchens. I heard you had
openings here," she said, getting straight to the point.

**Abrupt little thing,** Cithara thought, picking up her cup of tea
from its saucer.

"I do. In the kitchens, the laundry, and among the cleaning staff. Is
there something in particular that interests you, Lindora?"

"I like working in the kitchens. I spent over four Turns as a student
in the Bakercraft Hall and baking is what I enjoy most." The thought
of being assigned to anything else provoked a small spike of anxiety
that Lindora firmly ignored. Her skills would be wasted outside of the
kitchens. She just needed to make sure the Headwoman understood that.

Cithara's eyebrows lifted a little. "Four turns at the Bakercraft
Hall? What made you decide to leave it?"

"I would have wanted to stay longer, but my father summoned me back to
marry," Lindora said matter-of-factly. And then, because it would come
out anyway, she added, "It's just my daughter and I now though. She's
almost two."

"Ah, yes," Cithara said, because she truly understood Lindora's
comment. She herself had married twice, not for love, but because of
family expectations and then to provide for her two daughters. "Will
your daughter be joining us here at the Hall, then?"

Lindora was relieved she did not have to provide any additional
details. "Yes, she will. I know at least one of the creche workers is
from the Harper Hall, so I'm hoping it will be a smooth transition."

"Of course it will be. We have wonderful creche workers here. And some
of the other children," she waved a hand with a little smile, "are the
sweetest things you've ever met. She'll love it." Cithara made a note
to have a special little package waiting to welcome Lindora's daughter
to the Printer Hall. "I can't promise you a very big room. It will be
modest, but provide all of your needs."

"Small is ok. We're living with my father now, so our own space will
be nice." It had been hard to transition from living with her husband
to moving back in with her father, and Lindora was looking forward to
more freedom. "When can I start?"

"As soon as you can move in. The cooks will be happy to have the help
as soon as possible." Cithara would tell them today that another pair
of hands was on the way.

"I'll let them know now." The head cook would be annoyed, but Lindora
knew she was pretty easy to replace. "I should be able to start in the
next few days."

Cithara stood to see Lindora out. "Excellent. I'm very glad you came
by today, Lindora. Safe travels on your walk back."

Lindora stood as well, smiling. "Thank you. See you soon." She was
excited to see what life at the new Hall would bring.
