J’nic’s life was now mostly occupied with supporting the Weyrhold’s newest weyrlings. However, that did not mean he forgot about the remaining Candidates. So, when a familiar face appeared at his door on one of the rare occasions he was actually in his office, he smiled. “Aydhara, it’s good to see you. Come on in."
Aydhara sulked into the office, closing the door quietly behind her. "How hard is it for candidates to transfer?" She asked bluntly as she sat down. "Casmari did it, but her Dad is at Dragonsfall. Do the staff take that under consideration?"
J’nic decided to answer her question before attempting to dig deeper. “As long as there’s a logical reason, transfers are usually accepted. And, yes, usually transfers are about being closer to family. However, they could be for any number of reasons: pursuing a craft, changing climates, wanting to be farther from family…” He met her eyes. “Where would you want to go?”
"High Reaches, probably. We still have family there. They haven't had any girls that Impressed blue, but there are more golds there. Dragonsfall has three golds and a girl that Impressed blue, so maybe there." Aydhara answered.
“It is true that we have fewer golds here than many other Weyrs,”J’nic admitted. “That’s bound to change at some point, but I don’t know when.” It sounded like she had a lot on her mind, so he put on his mindhealer’s hat and began to ask questions. “So, you’re interested in a blue?”
"Yes! I mean, I'll take green over not Impressing at all. Which sounds really ungrateful of me, I know. In all likelihood it'll be a green, because there's only three girls on blues. But I want a boy dragon." Aydhara said.
He supposed he should not be surprised that some of the female Candidates would prefer to Impress a blue, now that it seemed to be an option. A part of him was curious to see how that would play out in the coming Turns. However, this was not the time to speculate.
“Well, as you know, no one knows exactly why a dragon will Impress one person over another. That’s even more true with female blueriders.” He shrugged. “So, I can’t help you get a boy dragon. However, I can strongly recommend that you don’t make any big decisions in the next few Sevendays. Take some time to see what things are like, and then you can decide if you want to transfer. Does that sound ok?”
"Yeah yeah." Aydhara said with a childish pout. "Dad's already talking about taking me firelizard hunting and going to see dolphins for Turn's End anyway." She could always count on her parents being extra doting after being left Standing, doubly so now that N'kayden was off with his stupid perfect dragon.
J’nic relaxed. It sounded like she would not be going anywhere any time soon. “That sounds like a great plan. I’ll be curious to hear more about the dolphins when you get back. Can’t say I’ve ever spent any time with them.”
"Me neither. Dad's very excited, though. Mom almost transferred to Dolphin Cove; getting to see dolphins was high on the pro- list for transferring." And then, after a moment, "But Barrier Lake is a great place, too. Lack of golds notwithstanding."
“It is a great place,” he agreed. “And I'm glad we get to keep you, for at least a little bit longer.” Not that his opinion mattered, but he hoped she Impressed at the next Hatching.
"It's too bad I can't move between here and High Reaches. And hey, Tymborikath is due to rise in the next few months, anyway. She'd just had a clutch before we transferred." Aydhara reasoned, though her goldflight math wasn't entirely accurate. She got up from the chair, slightly less sulky than before. "Thank you for your time, sir."
