If asked, many people would say that J'ine didn't bother with politics.
That was a blatant lie, but a lie that he wanted people to believe. The little-known truth was that he didn't _want_ people to know that he engaged in political affairs. That meant that he had to wait for an opportunity to introduce himself to the new Weyrwoman's Second… Such as an open seat during lunch time. Why, he would be an impolite bronzerider if he _didn't_ take the opportunity to introduce himself.
“Weyrwoman's Second,” he said, taking a seat with a polite incline of his head. “I don't believe we've met. I'm J'ine of bronze Iyoth, also known as ‘that oversized lizard's pitiful oil boy’.”
Aydhan looked the man up and down over her mug of klah. "Well met, Iyoth's pitiful oil boy." She teased. "I believe he's already introduced himself to Tymborikath. Tell me, sir. Is the humor…part of the charm? Will you pause after each joke for me to laugh?"
“Well, that depends,” J’ine easily said. “You see, my wonderful Weyrwoman, I am the sort of magnificent individual who will modify his entire personality to say and do whatever will get your approval. Unless, of course, you wouldn’t like that.” A shit-eating grin crossed J’ine’s lips.
Aydhan leaned back in her chair. "That is…very sad. Do you use your humor to keep people at a distance? How do you feel when the laughter stops?"
The grin vanished as J'ine's face fell into an expression shifted into something stone cold serious. Perfectly grim, he said, “Dead inside.”
"I thought so. Mindhealing isn't my speciality, but I can put a referral in for you. R'brie is a little …eccentric, but you two might get along."
“I’ll make it my mission to drag him down with me.”
Aydhan cocked an eyebrow. "I'll see what appointments he has. He's been out on Search more often than not, with Riyanth's clutch on the Sands, but I'm sure he can make time. Is there anything else I can do for you, sir?"
“Invest in poorly-written erotica,” J'ine said without missing a beat. “A dear friend of mine is the new Master Printer and one of his journeymen is flagging. Imagine what a good word from a Weyrwoman's Second would do for… Uh… Sunset on Emerald Hide, I think it was.”
"Oh, don't you worry your silly little head about that Printer Hall. Barrier Lake seems to give them plenty of patronage. Have you considered asking any of the greenriders to be that man's muse? The title sounds beyond my experience. So, you're one of the Dolphin Cove transfers? How well do you know the Master Printer?"
“Ah, I consider myself above such _uncouth _ behavior,” J'ine said with a wave of his hand - and a grin that implied he was not above it at all. Still, there was reason to protest. Then, more seriously, he said, “Dolphin Cove, yeah. Aleriand and I are old friends; we roamed in the same circles for a time.”
"It's good to have friends in high places." Aydhan said. "What do you think of Dolphin Cove? I almost transferred there, myself. Kapera and Cyradis were racing to interview potential 'seconds. Nidre and I have been meaning to meet and trade notes."
“It's an interesting place. It was home for a time, but…” J'ine's smile shifted into something thin and tense before he dismissed it with a wave of his hand. “I needed a change.”
"I can understand that." Aydhan said with a nod. Her expression changed into something akin to interest for a moment before it vanished again. She looked up, registering the time, before quickly collecting her things. "I must cut whatever this is short. I'm running late for my next meeting. A pleasure, oil boy."
J’ine chuckled and offered Aydhan a jaunty salute. “See ya around, weyrwoman second.”
