Aydhan

Aydhan

*~*~*~*

All the dragons were distracted on the day that Aydhan arrived at Barrier Lake Weyrhold, including Seneth. F'lin could barely get him to pay attention at drills and was relieved when the Wing was released early. As soon as he could, Seneth was off to introduce himself to the new queen, flashing his wings and stretching his neck in what his rider thought was an absurd display.

F'lin himself didn't actually see the new Weyrwoman's Second until the next day when they passed in the hallway. He nodded but didn't stop; she likely had a million other things to do and people to meet. But he did stop when he saw her the day after on top of the cliff, staring down into the Weyrbowl. He cleared his throat as he approached her. "Weyrwoman Aydhan?"

Tymborikath did not seek the attention out, but she adored it all the same. Aydhan let her be, enjoying the warmth secondhand through their bond. If she was cheerier and happier over the last few days, well, no one here would know to notice. It made the change of scenery and the huge amount of people to know and things to do a little less overwhelming.

She took a short break and absconded to the cliffside, enjoying the view and the cool breeze with a mug of klah she'd stolen from the Lower Caverns. "That's me!" She answered cheerily, turning to glance at the young man and glanced at his shoulder knots. "I think I've seen you around the last few days, Wingsecond...?"

"F'lin. Of Ash Wing." He sketched a shallow bow. "I thought I should introduce myself. How are you finding Barrier Lake so far?"

"It's good to meet you, F'lin." Aydhan said. "Ash Wing...that's the Weyrleader's Wing, right? I'm still getting used to the names. I've fallen in love with Barrier Lake already." She gushed, "Tymborikath and I are enjoying watching the ships sail into the bay, although I need to do a double-take every time someone refers to the weyrbowl. It's not where I expect it to be." She gestures broadly at the bay below them, exactly where she would expect the actual weyrbowl to be.

"It is a bit unique," he said, moving to stand by the edge of the cliff next to her. "I like the ships, too. I don't think I could be at a Weyr without a big, open bit of water. I'd miss it too much."

"High Reaches has a weyrlake in the caldera, but it's frozen over half the turn." Aydhan shuddered. "I'm looking forward to real summer weather and mild winters. And we have holds north along the coast, right? I promised my weyrmate that there would be dolphins."

Mild winters?! F'lin felt like he was frozen solid during the colder months. "There's a whole bunch of good beaches up that way. I can point you at a few that the dolphins seem to like, if you want. And maybe a couple to avoid. There's a few nice looking ones that have strong rip tides."

"Oh, that'd be lovely." Aydhan said. "We can make a restday of it, if the teenagers allow themselves to be wrangled. Are there any other sights I should see in my travels?"

F'lin blinked, wondering how he'd somehow invited himself on a family trip. "If you're out that way anyway, Jade Harbour Hold is nice. Sunstone Seahold can be a bit windy and rainy, though."

"Jade Harbour on the beach day." Aydhan repeated. "Well, my family thanks you for the tips. I do want to see Sunstone Seahold at some point, if the weather can agree. The wine from there was a rare treat. I'm excited that I have more reason to go there now."

"They have great little citrus tarts, too. And candied citrus peel, if you're into that sort of thing."

"Oh?" Aydhan did indeed look interested. "That sounds wonderful. Thank you for all the tips, F'lin. You wouldn't happen to know the best place for finding or obtaining firelizard eggs, do you? My weyrmate is keen on going hunting for them. Beaches, right?"

The bronzerider nodded. "There's a few beaches I know they've nested at, but as you can probably tell I've had zero luck." He ran a hand through his hair a bit sheepishly. "And believe me, I've _tried_. But you can't catch 'em all, right?"

"You can certainly try. Do you mind if I introduce you to my weyrmate? N'kevyn's been talking about collecting a fair now that he's a Southerner, but the poor thing doesn't have many friends yet." As if she needed to socialize him. "Maybe you two will have better luck if you're beachcombing together."

F'lin was never one to turn down an offer to go beachcombing. "Sure, happy to! But if he wants to actually find a firelizard egg he's probably better off with anyone _but_ me."

Aydhan smiled, "Well, maybe you two will bring each other luck. Couldn't hurt, right?" She tipped her mug back to get the final bits of klah at the bottom. "It was great meeting you, Wingsecond. I'm sure we've both got to get back to work. I'll have N'kevyn reach out for a firelizard date."

"Sure, anytime." It felt odd to have a goldrider set up a date for him with her weyrmate, but then, goldriders were often a bit odd. If N'kevyn was as friendly as Aydhan was then he'd have no problem spending an afternoon scrambling over rocks like he was nineteen turns again. F'lin waved goodbye as she left, turning his gaze back to the weyrbowl, his thoughts full of firelizards as he watched the boats come in.
