Y'gel

Y'gel

Aughashyth watched the weyrlings for a time from the Weyr heights and then reached out to the little green in greeting.

}:Hello Brandith, mine would like to speak to yours when she is free from her duties.:{

The little green chirped and immediately spoke to her rider. }:Aughashyth's wants to speak to you!:{ She sounded very pleased that an older dragon had sought her out.

Reyela paused. **He does?**

There was a small silence. }:Yes,:{ Brandith had already forgotten what Aughashyth had told her about 'when'. When wasn't a very important concept for little dragons yet.

Her rider sighed and set her broom aside. **All right. Please tell Kularth that we are going to see Aughashyth's rider, and that I'll finish up my chores later.**

}:I will tell him!:{ Brandith's mindvoice was bursting with pride.

Her weyrling rider hid a smile. Sweeping the Candidate's barracks was a more solitary chore than most, and she was happy to leave it to speak with the Weyrdragonhealer. Y'gel must have had a chance to evaluate her application, and Reyela hurried as she headed toward his office. She paused in the hallway long enough to tidy her blond hair back from her face and smooth out the wrinkles in her tunic before knocking. "Y'gel, sir? You wanted to see me?"

"Yes," he smiled. "Is your lifemate with you?"

"Oh! No..." Reyela felt her heart drop. "Brandith didn't say anything about coming with me. I'm so sorry, should I go get her?"

"No, don't worry about it," he said with a kind smile. "She's still very young and wouldn't fully understand. "Can you tell me why you'd like to be a dragonhealer?"

"I always wanted to be a dragonhealer, even before the Pass started." Reyela sat down across from Y'gel, her eyes shining. "I've always loved dragons and animals, and I know how important dragon health is to the Weyr and their riders. I know that taking care of dragons is the best way for me to contribute to the Weyr and earn my place. But I also know how hard a job it can be. I..." She hesitated, her smile dimming. "I've seen dragons come back with horrible Threadscores. I've seen them go /between/ with or without their riders. I hate it, and if I can help stop it from happening, then that's what I want to do."

"Yes," he nodded. "And you're a greenrider who'll fight thread for half the 'fall and heal dragons for the other half." Y'gel smiled. He already had several apprentices who were that way. "Have you had any dragonhealing classes or experience yet?"

"I''ve earned my Senior Apprentice knots in Beasthealing, and I've helped run bandages and fetch whatever else is needed during Threadfall. I've sat in on a few of the dragonhealing classes, but to be honest, sir, I was always kind of discouraged from taking them when I hadn't Impressed yet and hadn't finished my Beastcraft training. I've taken a few, but mostly it's just the basics."

Y'gel was puzzled by the thought that someone would discourage her from pursuing the craft just because she hadn't Impressed yet. "I don't know who told you that but we always accept apprentices without lifemates if they're of the age to still Stand. The problem is in promotion to Journeyman where you need a lifemate. In any case, we can test your knowledge and see where to place you.

Reyela looked startled, then resigned. Perhaps different Weyrs trained differently, or more likely Y'gel was right and she'd missed out on Turns of training because of bad advice. Who would have lied like that?! She nodded. "I'm ready."

"Great," he smiled. "Would you like to just jump right in or study for a week and see where you think you belong right now?"

"I'd love to just jump in, if you're all right with that?" Whatever she didn't know, Reyela was sure that she'd learn quickly enough. She was going to start dragonhealing!

"Alright," Y'gel nodded. He'd certainly seen her around the place enough to know something about her and that her intrest was not just recently acquired. "Let's see how you do. There is a Senior Apprentice class in about an hour on setting bones. Just time enough for you to check on your lifemate and get a quick bite."

"Oh, I'd love that!" Finally, a real dragonhealing class! She knew about setting bones in other creatures, but this was _dragons_! She knew all about dragon skeletal anatomy already, but was the composition of dragon bones different than, say, a runner's? Or a human's, for that matter? "Should I bring anything besides a notebook?"

"No, not for this class. You'll all be feeling Aughashyth's wingsail to see what you can detect in that wing of his."

Reyela nodded eagerly. Aughashyth did fly at a bit of an angle. "Thank you so much, Weyrhealer. I'm so excited. But I should go feed Brandith before class... do we meet in the Weyrbowl? Where do I go?"

"Just come right back here. We'll do it in that main room so Aug can fit." Y'gel smiled at her obvious enthusiasm. Hopefully it rubbed off on some of the other apprentices. "See you soon," he waved her out.
