Zavek released a contented sigh as he walked beside Brennault, their hands linked by the loose joining of their hands. They were far out from Lavender Run on the remote trail that Brennault used for his deliveries. Moonshade chuffed softly behind them, moseying obediently behind his master while Alfalfa barked and cavorted about in his silly canine fashion.
“Sometimes, I wish this trail lasted forever,” Zavek said to Brennault.
"Me, too," said Brennault. "But... if it never ended, we'd never get to the best part." He grinned mischievously and squeezed Zavek's hand. Saying goodbye at the end almost always came with a ‘parting gift’ from Brennault.
Marvel cheeped as he returned from having scouted ahead to where the trail joined the more heavily trafficked road. He never bothered to look farther than that, as Brennault never considered it. The firelizard snuggled around his person's neck and rested his head on his shoulder.
Brennault's comment caused the corner of Zavek's mouth to lift in a little smirk. It was true, their goodbyes were usually very memorable, and they were the only things that sometimes kept the man going while Brennault was gone.
"All parts with you are the best," Zavek said, returning the hand squeeze.
Brennault's grin broadened to a true, warm smile. Zavek always knew the sweetest thing to say.
He wrapped his arms around the man's waist and kissed him. Marvel gave a brief chirp of protest and then relocated himself to the tree behind them" the one that best blocked the view from the road. As far as Brennault knew.
Grabbing the front of Brennault's shirt, Zavek pulled the runner down with him to the ground by the tree. This was one of the only places where they could be themselves - without fear. No inhibitions. Sometimes it made Zavek wish for other things, like maybe that he lived at the Weyr where his feelings for Brennault wouldn't be a problem, but reality would inevitably settle back around him. He pushed reality away for the moment.
"How long until I see you again?" Zavek asked when they parted, lips red from kissing.
"I'll be back as soon as I can," said Brennault. "I need to be delivering local near the weyr for a while to keep my spot. Maybe a month, maybe two after I get back, depending on how long it takes for someone to send something your way. Or if you have something you need me to come pick up..."
Zavek mulled over the options. "I wonder if I could find a reason to come to the Weyr? We'd still have to be careful, of course, but.... I'm sure Dolphin Cove will be having a Turns End celebration? I could also make plans to visit with the beastcrafters there regarding runners.... Or maybe I just show up in complete disguise?"
Brennault's eyes brightened with some combination of excitement and mischief.
"I think we could find a way to keep you disguised. Although, you might be a bit disappointed with how small my bunk is." He grinned. "Then again, that would give us an excuse to find a few more adventurous places..."
He would love to introduce Zavek to his friends at the Weyr, but that would have to be handled carefully as well if they risked it. None of them knew who he had been seeing, but some of them would be clever enough to have figured out it had to be a holder.
It was a risk to be sure but....Who would recognize him? He was one of Farmer Zaverak's six sons and while his father held one of the largest tracts of land, and sent the largest tithe of crops to Emerald Falls Hold out of any other farm, it wasn't as if _he_ attended enough events to be easily recognizable.
"Let's do it," Zavek said, showing his rare smile. "Do you know a dragonrider that you trust? I wouldn't want to take Moonshade all the way to the Weyr."
"I know several," said Brennault. "But I have a couple in mind." He radiated excitement. The thought of not having to leave Zavek was exhilarating, and the element of sneaking added its own spice.
"Perfect. Work that out and then send Marvel to let me know about the arrangements." Zavek stroked the nape of Brennault's neck. "I'd better get back to Lavender Run before someone wonders what's taking so long."
"Are you sure you don't have time for one more quick goodbye?" Brennault grinned. He could certainly take it as a challenge to finish Zavek off in record time.
Zavek cut his eyes at Brennault, the corner of his mouth tilting. "Well, I guess there's time for _one_ more quick goodbye."
As the two men said their final goodbye, in the distance, a pair of watchful eyes slowly crept away.
