The brownrider stepped back as the riders began to collect their gear and finish up after the drill.
**Donneth, will you ask Imarith's to stay back one moment,** K'deren asked.
The green dragon dutifully relayed the message, and her rider frowned. Alina had thought they'd done just fine in drills today... unless one of their wingmates had said something. **Leyhe.** Alina glanced suspiciously at the other greenrider. **Why does K'deren want us? Did Donneth say?**
}:No.:{ The green shifted from foot to foot while they waited. }:He did not sound angry.:{
Dragons never sounded angry. Or rarely sounded angry. Alina sighed and schooled her expression into something bland and vaguely pleasant. **I suppose we'll find out soon enough.**
As the young woman came over, K'deren noted the carefully composed expression on her face. **Donneth, please tell Imarith that there is no need to worry here, there's nothing wrong,** he asked of his brown.
Imarith passed the message along, much to Alina's relief. She kept her expression bland as she pulled off her helmet. Her carefully braided black hair frizzed around her head and gleamed in the sun. "What can I do for you,
Wingsecond?"
"You can relax," K'deren said. "Seriously, I just wanted to tell you I'd noticed how much effort you two were putting in out there, it shows."
Alina blinked. "Oh. Uh, thank you, Wingsecond." Mentally she reviewed what she and Imarith had did that day, but it seemed fairly ordinary overall.
}:We fly very well together, and with the Wing,:{ Imarith interjected smugly. }:This is why I chose you.:{
"You have potential, so I want you to keep it up." He meant it, talented riders needed encouraging, and sometimes guiding. Donneth thought that perhaps one day they could see Imarith and Alina as Wingthirds. "It's the sort of thing that leads to future promotions."
"Oh!" Alina looked up, wide-eyed. Promotions!? What did one say to that? "Oh. Well... thank you. Sir."
"You're welcome Alina," K'deren replied. "You could have wingthird knots one day. so keep working hard."
She blinked again. "I.. uh. Thank you, sir. But I'm not really sure what I did to... make you notice?"
"You two cared about getting it right, that's what Donneth and I spotted," K'deren told her. "And those who care, often go on to be the best."
Alina still wasn't sure what exactly they'd done to 'get it right', but she appreciated the complement anyway. Drills usually left her on edge. She wanted to be perfect, which would protect both herself and Imarith in Thread. Usually, though, her wingmates just called her uptight instead of saying she was doing a good job. She smiled shyly. "Thank you, sir."
"You're welcome," K'deren told her. "Now, go and enjoy the rest of the day. You deserve it."
"Thank you, sir." Alina nodded gratefully, then retreated. The complement made her feel warm inside. Perhaps maybe she wasn't so bad at being a dragonrider after all.
