Alina

Alina

Sometimes drills meant waiting on the ground while the other nines flew their formations. Alina stayed on Imarith, but half of her nine were lounging on the ground by their dragons, idly chatting as they watched their wingmates in the sky. "I heard you hooked up with C'ledon," P'kath said to Leyhe. He was sitting on his dragon's blue foot, winding grass around his fingers as if he was making a basket. "Is he any good in the furs?"

"Umm... well?" Leyhe grimaced. "Maybe he's better with men?"

P'kath snickered. "That bad, hmm?"

"Not bad, just... not good, either." The greenrider sighed. "I don't think I'll invite him back to my weyr tonight."

Alina shifted on her dragon and tried to pretend she wasn't listening. She didn't much like Leyhe, but good gossip was hard to resist.

"Spill!" P'kath threw his little wad of grass at Leyhe. "How come not good? I want details. I _need_ details."

Leyhe caught Alina's sideways glance and her voice grew sly. "Well... when a standard is set so high..."

"Ooo! What's your standard?" P'kath asked eagerly.

"You know you're having a good lay when it gets _loud_. Real loud. Like, echoing down the hallways and waking up your neighbours, loud." Leyhe paused for a beat. "Right, Alina? _You_ get it."

Alina immediately felt herself go bright red. She and J'ackt _had_ spent... intimate time together last night, but nobody _heard_. Right!? "I don't know what you're talking about," she said stiffly.

"Oh, don't you deny it. I was going to the bathing caverns last night and heard you yodeling at the top of your lungs. I think the entire Weyr got an earful of your good time." Leyhe bared her teeth in a smile. "But then, your new weyrmate sure has a lot of practice. I mean, he's had just about half the female population through his furs since he got here, so _his_ standards are... well, let's just say that who he does and what he does both involve a lot of volume."

"Shut up, Leyhe," Alina hissed. She stared very hard at the sky where the rest of her Wing was practicing. Including Cosani. She blinked away the the image of Shalith's pretty green wings and chose to stare at the clouds instead, finding it easier on her fraying nerves. **Don't think about it.**

"Too bad J'ackt rides bronze," P'kath sighed. "I hear he's dynamite in the furs. How'd you manage to snag someone like that anyway? You're kind of..." he shrugged, and Leyhe giggled. "Well, you're _you_."

"And you're a pair of nitwits," Alina shot back. Her face was flaming and her skin prickled with embarrassment. Imarith shifted her feet uneasily, picking up on her rider's humiliation. "Honestly, watch the drill."

"Nah, _some_ of us got enough sleep to have already picked it up," Leyhe said smoothly.

"Oh, lay off," G'red said, cutting in. He was sitting on his green on on Leyhe's far side and had a clear view of Alina's bright red face. "It's our turn soon. You should strap in before K'deren summons us."

"Who made you leader of our nine?" P'kath grumbled. He stood and stretched.

Leyhe stood as well, then climbed onto her green's back. The drill above them did look as though it was wrapping up. "Better to have K'deren mad at us than D'hol. Who do you think will lead our wing now that he's been sent to the new Weyr?"

G'red shrugged. "Who knows. He's a good Wingleader, but he's also just off from a surgery. How long does it take to heal up from a surgery, anyway?"

"I hear that they took a tumor out of him that was the size of a melon," Leyhe said with relish.

"I heard that it was the size of your head!" P'kath said gleefully.

Alina let the conversation turn. Shells, was Leyhe right? _Had_ the entire Weyr heard her and J'ackt the night before?! She sat ramrod straight on Imarith's back and wished she could instead crawl off under a rock and stay there. Or maybe Imarith's aim could 'accidentally' slip and she could flame Leyhe right out of their lives. **I don't _yodel_.** It was crass and juvenile-- both the act and suggesting that she, of all people, would be that... _loud_. Alina blushed even harder. **And none of her stupid business. She's just jealous because she's pathetic and alone.**

Finally K'deren finally summoned them to join the drill. Alina had never been happier to take to the skies.
