D'hol

D'hol looked over the lake from the ledge, arms crossed as he watched
Yumath push sand into what would be the Hatching Grounds. The bronze
worked feverishly, knowing what it would be used for, and eager for it
to be filled with _his_ eggs. It was useless to remind him that he
might not catch the queen who rose first; the dragon was supremely
confident in his own abilities. The crunch of gravel from approaching
feet made him turn. "Yes?"

N'call stepped forward and stretched out his hand. "N'call of bronze
Haloth," he said and watched as his own lifemate began pushing sands
with equal fervor.

D'hol took the proffered hand, looking the younger man over as he
introduced himself. "D'hol of bronze Yumath, Wingleader. You came with
Teseada and her Onnyth, did you not?"

"We did," he nodded. "Haloth is Onnyth's current mate. I am also the
father of Teseada's son. Sir," he added. He didn't have experience as
a Wingleader or even 'second and knew he wasn't as experienced as the
man he was standing with. "I think I can say we're very glad you're
here."

"Thank you. I heard your Haloth was. Yumath is Riyanth's current mate.
She'll be arriving soon." He turned to look at the pair of bronzes,
Yumath now studiously attempting to outdo the younger bronze. "The
next few sevendays may be interesting." He turned back to N'call.
"What kind of experience do you have? I've not seen the transfer hides
yet."

"Mostly filling in for the Wingsecond on occasion and leading nines.
I've led in second half of fall several times, but not a full fall."
He knew he was revealing his lack of skills but it was hard to rise to
the top at Dragonsfall with the strong leadership there already.

D'hol nodded. "Well, you'll be getting even more experience here, I'm
sure. You'll have to. We've only skeleton wings and Thread's still
falling, so you may have to work with both wings until we flesh them
out. Do you craft at all? "

"Of course," he nodded. "I'm a Harper," he said. "I make instruments."
He hadn't done much to advance from Junior Journeyman since Haloth had
found him on the Sands. But he still loved the feel of the wood in his
hands as he shaped it. He'd even had some conversations with Master
Bilpen after seeing the quality of woodworking in the buildings and
furniture being produced by his workshop.

"Hmmm. Has K'ran explained to you that we'll need every one's skills
to get the Weyrhold in good working order? We'll not have regular rest
days, not like at Dragonsfall or Dolphins Cove. How are you going to
use your skills here?"

"Well," N'call half smiled. "I _am_ a Harper and while my specialty
might not be needed, I can Archive and play and sing. I am very good
with hidework." He knew that not all bronzeriders liked that sort of
thing.

"That's not what I meant. Yes, we'll need those archive skills, but
do you think you can work with woodcrafters in carving? Granted it
won't be instruments, but that skill is in short supply right now.
Do you have objection to it?"

"No objection at all," N'call nodded. "I'm certain I can learn from
Master Bilpen," he smiled.

"Good to hear. We're requesting riders like you who can adapt their
skills if necessary and can handle the increased work load. Even the
goldriders will be putting forth extra effort." He looked at N'call
and gave a brief smile. "We're hoping who ever flies the first rising
queen will continue that. "

"It's a good plan," he said. Then he chuckled. "If dragons could
sweat, they'd be covered," he said indicating the heroic efforts of
the two bronzes pushing sand into the hatching grounds. The workman's
piles had mostly been rendered from mountains to foothills. But more
barrows were being wheeled in to be dumped for the dragons. He shook
his head. "We'll have to bathe them soon."

D'hol chuckled softly. "I don't think their competitiveness eases as
they age. I think Yumath will go as long as your Haloth, just to
prove a point. " He crossed his arms over his chest as he watched the
pair. "Aye, most likely. But they don't seem to be ready to quit yet.
Tell me a bit about yourself. I like to know those I fly with."

"Well," he thought a moment. "I have a greenrider weyrmate back at
Dragonsfall. She couldn't come with use because she's carrying twins."
His eyes softened when he thought about Ninaine. "I had rather planned
on those rest days to go see her but... for the good of the Weyrhold."

"Twins? Congratulations. You're a brave man, leaving behind a
pregnant weyrmate." His lips quirked. "For the good of the Weyrhold,
yes, but you'll have time for brief visits. I hope your greenrider
is understanding of the necessity."

"Well," he half smiled. "Perhaps she will and perhaps she won't, it's
a toss up. One can hope though."
