J'ackt stared at the simple ring in the box and frowned, turning it
side to side to let the light catch the little carved piece of glass
set in the simple band. Such a tiny thing, but it had so much meaning.
Alina. Faranth, what was he going to do about her? She was waiting to
be weyrmated and Faranth, sometimes he felt as though if that's what
it would take, he'd do it, but then another person entered his mind
when ever he thought about it.
Light brown hair, blue eyes, and Faranth help him, an amazing little
body. She was sultry, sexy, fantastic in the furs, and matched him
movement for movement. He positively and thoroughly enjoyed spending
time with Cosani; she was fun and never pressed for anything more than
he wanted to give. He could relax completely around her, laugh, not
worry about being on his guard, and what she could do with her
mouth... He pushed that thought away before he had to take matters in
his own hands...again. He didn't want to give that up.
He had Cyradis' advice, but...maybe he needed someone else's. Someone
who rode a green and wouldn't be biased. Saidrene, well, she was
Alina's friend. Who else did he know? His brows rose at a thought.
Finally feeling strong enough to emerge from his weyr, he hurried to
another, moving quietly along the corridors. He took a breath, paused,
then knocked briskly on his aunt's door.
Timassa didn't have all that many visitors to her weyr so the sound of
a knock was a bit unexpected. She threw on a wrap over her underthings
not knowing exactly who it might be and held it closed with one hand
while she opened the door. Her brows shot up in surprise but a smile
twitched up and she tilted her head in invitation. "Come on in," she
said. "How are you feeling?"
Completely absorbed in his own thoughts, J'ackt didn't notice
Timassa's brief attire and at her invitation, came in. The sight of
her much smaller weyr really caught his attention, but he pushed that
aside as well. "I'm feeling alright. Just wanted to talk of you had a
bit of time. "
"Sure," she smiled and seated herself on the small couch. "What's up?"
He exhaled and plopped down on a chair, scrubbing a hand over his
face. "Need the advice of a greenrider who's weyrbred, really. I have
a bit of a problem."
"Happy to help if I can," she said. It certainly seemed important to
him in any case.
Quickly, he gave a brief explanation of the problem: Alina's lack of
experience and holdbred expectations, her seeming fear of him, his
own feelings, and his desire to also keep company with Cosani. "I
don't know how to even begin to approach it. I love her, I really do,
but I don't want to give Cosani up either. I can relax with her,
she's fun, and we're compatible in ...lots of ways. But Alina, I
think she's wanting everything a marriage would be at a hold, and I
can't give her that. "
"Hmmm," she mused. "Well, first you're only twenty and Hold marriages
are life long arrangements. Besides," she shrugged. "They aren't
really practical for the Weyr." She stopped for a moment. "But if you
really love her that is another matter entirely. So, I guess the
question is, do you love her that much or do you just want into her
pants?"
"If that's all I wanted, then I could have done it already." His reply
was confident but dry before he shrugged. "I want her like crazy dure,
but I want her to be happy too. I went celebate for months just to try
to prove to her that I was
serious. Got her a ring and everything. But... shards, I missed
Cosani like crazy too. Alina just kind of backed off and after I got
hurt, she wanted me. But I don't want her to do that out of guilt. I
can't explain it. The one time we were in bed together, just
sleeping...it felt right. It felt good. I want her to trust me and no
matter what I do, it doesn't fecking work. She's so scared of
anything related to weyr relations. She wasn't...prepared for her first
flight. "
"Oh that's not good J'ackt," Timassa said. "I've seen this before.
It's never easy on the greenrider and even worse if she's forced in
her flight. But I'm sure the Weyrlingmasters already told her all of
that. Right?" It was obvious he had deep feelings for the girl. "Is
she demanding anything of you? Or is she just scared?"
"I know. I offered to help her, but she never took me up on it. Yeah,
they told her. They told all of us." He rubbed his eyes. "She hasn't
asked anything of me. And I don't think she's ever been with a man
outside of flights. Ever. I want to show her that it's not always like
that. I've even tried keeping Zith out of her flights, just so she
doesn't see me like that."
Timassa nodded. "Well, that's not the worst idea. But were I you, I
wouldn't set her expectation for you to be monogamous. That is a hard
path in the Weyr."
"Shards, I know I can't be that. If I could just have her and Cosani,
I think I'd be pretty satisfied." He exhaled, rubbing the bridge of
his nose, then paused and looked at his aunt, realizing something.
"Alina's a twin too. Not like you and mam though. Her sister's pretty
different. And she gives Alina cause all sorts of grief cause she
rides a green."
"So a holder and you wonder where she gets all the holder ideas? Sorry
J'ackt," she shook her head. "I just don't see how this is going to
work out. It sounds like a field devastated by Threadfall to me. No
way to win." Of course, she knew the heart wanted what the heart
wanted and he'd do what he wanted to do. "But my heart isn't involved.
I'd just hate to see her flame all over you."
His shoulders slumped for only a moment before his brows knit in
sudden thought. He looked up at Timassa, considering, calculating,
then finding a possible solution. "She's in your wing. If I can't
help her, maybe you can. Cyradis made me go to a Mind Healer and I
hate to admit it, but he helped. Can't you make her go?"
"Thats not a bad idea J'ackt," she said. "I've spent time with a
mindhealer, it can really help."
"I just want her to be happy, even if it's not with me. But I think
she just hates everything about her life now. She doesn't hate
Imarith, I know that, but..." He looked down and rubbed his face. "I
had a hard time seeing the Weyr as home. I really did. I had a hard
time accepting things. I still do. I can understand some of how she
feels. A bit. But, Faranth, Aunt, I want to see her happy. I want to
see her really smile, even if it's not at me."
Her expression didn't change but she realized by that one statement
that he actually loved the girl. "Alright," she said. "I'll make sure
she gets the help she needs."
He visibly relaxed and leaned back in his chair. "Thank you." There
was a pause. "Can you not tell that it was my idea? If possible? I'm
likely to have my balls yanked off and I'd like to keep 'em where they
are. She'd not thank me for interfering, good intentions or not." He
flashed a bit of a grin. "She's got a temper on her."
**And she's got you wound around her finger,** though Timassa didn't
know if that was good or bad until she met the girl. "I'll keep your
name out of it."
