Aviday

Aviday

---

The scissors snipped at brown hair and Aviday held back a sigh as she
watched the bits of hair flutter down. She attempted to turn her head,
but her mother quickly scolded, "Keep still, Aviday. I swear, it takes
longer every time I have to do this."

"I could grow it out, Mama." Aviday tried to hold still, but her leg
twitched and bounced as her mother forced her head down to get close
to the back of her neck.

Daturna snorted softly. "It's far too thick for me to have time to
take care of it. Besides, didn't you say you were going to be a
Candidate? They usually make the girls cut their hair anyway.'

Aviday sighed. She hadn't had long hair since she was little and even
though it was easier to take care of, if she had longer hair at least
she wouldn't be called "lad" or "boy" every single day. If only...

"Did I tell you? I think I nearly caught N'vanik's eye the other day.
Just imagine, me mothing the Weyrleader. It was close, but that other
girl got to him first." Her mother gave a disgruntled sigh. "I'll
snatch him up eventually and see if all the buzz is true." She combed
at Aviday's hair. "Just think, Avi! If a gold egg is laid or you
Impress a green, I can moth one of _your_ flights!"

Aviday looked back at her mother, her face contorted with distaste at
the thought. "Mama! Ew..."

"Look that way." Daturna forced her head back to face forward. "And
don't be so silly, Avi. You'll be excited when your green rises. And
the men who'll chase..." she blew an appreciative whistle. "They'll
all want you."

Aviday gave a groan. "Mama..."

"Have you taken care of that little problem of yours yet?" She turned
her daughter's head to trim along the ears.

"I'm only fourteen, Mama!"

"Nonsense. When I was your age, I was already mothing flights." She
paused. "But, I did look much older and was more...developed."

Aviday didn't even want to think of the rather large differences
between her and her mother. They were substantial differences. Her
mother was buxom, pretty, blonde and blue eyed. All Aviday had was the
blue eyes. And perhaps the height. Her mother wasn't a tall woman by
any standards, but men seems to like that about her; and Aviday knew,
a few women as well.

"Psh...Just moth a flight, Avi. The men won't care what you look like,
I promise."

"Thanks, Mama." Aviday responded, with a bit of resentment that her
mother simply didn't notice. Her mother never seemed to notice that
her words could sometimes sting. "Are you done yet?"

"Just about. You'll be staying in the Candidate's barracks now, but
don't forget to come and visit when you need your hair trimmed, okay?"
She finished with a final snip and stopped, leaning back

"Sure, Mama." Grateful that her mother was finished she rose and
dusted the stray hairs off of her shoulders. "I'll see you later."

"Just don't come after dark, okay?"

"I know, Mama."
