R'nar was not surprised when the Headwoman's firelizard popped into his weyr and began conversing with Iorath. He had been anticipating a visit from her or K'sedel all day.
}:The Headwoman wishes to speak with you in her office.:{
The bronzerider swung his feet to the floor, sighing as he pushed up from his bed. He had tried to go after Ranni, to try and explain and apologize for what had been done and said while Iorath was chasing Panitath, but by the time he'd caught up he'd seen her leaving in the protection of Dolphin Cove's Headwoman.
R'nar could very well imagine what it must have looked like when Ranni showed up in a torn shirt, crying and clearly upset. The annoying part was that R'nar was sure that he hadn't done anything inappropriate, other than put his foot in his mouth.
}:He is on his way, if you would tell the Headwoman.:{ Iorath told Company, whose wings fluttered a bit faster in excitement at having the bronze speak to him.
The other thing lurking in the back of his mind was his mother. What if she heard? He knew how gossip spread and morphed and by the time it reached her ears it would probably sound as if he had mauled some poor, innocent Candidate in a closet. Although, that seemed a little too close to the truth for comfort, R'nar thought.
He went over what he would say a thousand times on his way to the Headwoman's office, but he still felt unprepared as he knocked on her door.
"R'nar," Chaysea swung the door open, a polite, business-type smile on her face as she gestured for him to come in and have a seat.
"You know why you're here?" she asked as she circled around her desk and took her seat.
"I'm assuming it has to do with Ranni," R'nar answered.
"Want to tell me what happened?"
"I offered to help her carry a couple of bags to the end of the hall. When we got there Panitath's flight started, Iorath decided to chase, and things went from there." R'nar sat forward, brown eyes hard. "I told her to leave, but she stayed. Then she kissed me, so what else was I supposed to think?"
Chaysea nodded slowly, showing none of her thoughts on her face. "I could see how you would think she was agreeable."
"Not just agreeable, she instigated the contact." R'nar pointed out. "When she said she'd never done anything like that before I immediately stopped. Iorath was also dropping out of the flight at that moment. The next thing I know she's shoving me backwards and running out the door."
"Did you say anything to her?" Chaysea asked.
"I... I might have said something about being surprised she was a virgin since she was a drudge." R'nar's cheeks felt hot.
Chaysea's eyebrows raised.
"But that's not how I meant it!" The young bronzerider rushed to say. "I was only surprised, I guess, that someone of her age and where she had lived would still be a virgin."
The Headwoman winced. "There's really no way to word that where it doesn't sound like an insult, R'nar."
R'nar huffed. "I know. I honestly... I honestly wished I hadn't said that. I had no intentions of ... 'seducing' Ranni. I did my best to maintain control and not merge with Iorath while he was in the flight."
Chaysea nodded slowly, letting him speak. She didn't know what it felt like to be linked to a dragon in a flight, so there was nothing she could say to him on that matter.
"Is she... is she okay?" R'nar asked, lifting his eyes back up to Chaysea.
"She will be." Chaysea answered, glad at least that he had inquired. "I believe she's embarrassed by her own actions."
"But she didn't do anything wrong!"
A little smile crossed the Headwoman's face. "I know, and neither did you, it would seem. Other than putting your foot in your mouth. These things happen during gold flights, especially. The fact that Ranni is so new to the Weyr and had never been around a flight previously didn't help."
"You're not going to tell D'hol, are you?" he asked.
Her lips twisted at the effort to not chuckle at his apprehension. "No, I will not be telling your Wingleader. Although in the future, I think it would be wise to take Iorath out of the Weyr when Panitath flies, don't you?"
R'nar looked embarrassed at having to be told something so obvious by the Headwoman. "Yes, ma'am." He hesitated a moment before adding, "And my mom, you're not going to tell her either, are you?"
"Only if she asks," Chaysea assured him. "Ranni feels that she is to blame, and you feel that you are to blame, and neither of you thinks that the other did anything wrong. As far as I am concerned this is just between the two of you."
"I would like to apologize to Ranni. Do you think she will let me?" R'nar asked.
"I don't think she will let that happen easily, but I do think it is the right thing for you to do on your part. You are accustomed to Weyr culture and mating flights, it should have been you that handled the situation properly."
R'nar bit on his lower lip. The Headwoman had a way of chastising without actually chastising. "Yes, ma'am."
"Thank you for your honesty, R'nar. You are free to go."
The bronzerider pushed to his feet. "Thank you Headwoman... and thank you for not telling anyone else."
Chaysea smiled. "Let's not make this a habit."
"No, ma'am."
