J'ackt

Zith bugled in alarm again, his basso cry desperate. }: He is killing
him! He is killing him! :{ Barreling past Volaith and a few greens
they had been sunning with, Zith made for the entrance of the Lower
Caverns, but his mass would never have fit through the doors. He felt
the pain of injuries, his rider's inner conflict and growing weakness.
In desperation, he broadcast the images he had received from his
rider.

A'kades was in the lower caverns storerooms. The tithe train that had
just arrived had brought a new shipment of leather from one of the
Holds and he was hoping to find some soft, supple hide to make some
gifts with. Turns End was coming up and it didn't hurt to begin
preparing presents now...

Volaith had been flirting with the greens, but he still was aware that
his rider was in the lower caverns working on a project. As soon as he
picked up the images Zith was broadcasting of his rider in trouble in
a dim storage corridor, he thrust them at his rider, everything he'd
picked up from the younger bronze. }:Zith's rider is injured in the
caverns! He is fighting with a man. He is wounded.:{

A'kades stopped dumb for a moment at the sudden impact of Volaith's
passed-on images. Usually the bronze was more gentle about sharing,
but the urgency of the situation and the images from Zith were by no
means gentle. It took him a few seconds to sort through the pictures,
but he recognized the corridor as the next one over from where he was.
He took off at a flat run.

}:My rider is going to help your rider,:{ Volaith told Zith.

As he was just rounding the corner he heard J'ackt's yell for help. He
saw the two figures locked in a fighting grapple, one holding the
other down. "J'ackt!" he shouted, racing over.

There was a metal object lying on the ground a few feet away, A'kades
didn't stop to look at it, more concerned by the fighting figures. At
first he was worried the other man was pinning J'ackt but then he saw
that the bronzerider was on top of the unknown man.

"J'ackt, I'm here. Give me the man," he said, dropping to his knees
next to the fighting pair and grabbing for the assailant's shoulder.
"I can hold him."

**Volaith, tell Zith I'm with his rider. And get a Healer down here.
And the Weyrleaders!**

}:Panitath, Loseth, Zith's rider has been attacked and my rider is
responding,:{ Volaith told the Weyrleader's dragons, providing some
images of where the problem was. After a moment he sent them to
Riyanth as well. Better to involve all the adult golds.

Too exhausted to argue, J'ackt released him and fell back, slumped
against the wall. Numbly, he placed a hand on his side, felt slick
blood and stared down at it.

Choking with the sudden allowance of air, Grevan didn't waste the
opportunity. He tried to rise, shoving away from A'kades as hard as
he could. He had to run, to get away. Head pounding, he struggled to
try to get to his feet, but his knee wouldn't allow it. Instead, he
struck out at the new arrival, going for the belt knife at his side.

A'kades had gotten into his share of scraps as a youth, but more
recently he'd been a Weyrlingmaster's Second and one of the
individuals responsible for teaching weyrlinghood dragonriders
self-defense lessons. So when he saw Grevan reach out, instinct took
over. He brought his left hand up to smack away the hand approaching
him, then punched out with his right fist into the man's jawline.

Saryolth screamed in response to Zith's desperate plea and only a
moment later Timassa was pelting to the Healers rooms. She grabbed
the first person she found and gave a garbled start before she
stopped, took a deep breath and said. "A rider has been attacked in
the lower caverns. I think it's a knife fight."

"Can you lead me there," Silain asked and grabbed a bag of tools and
medications for just such emergencies.

"Yes I think so," Timassa asked Saryolth to get a picture of where
Zith knew his rider to be. "I can get you there," she nodded after a
moment.

They began running through the corridors and soon Timassa was on the
scene and ran directly to J'ackt. "Here," she told the healer and she
was on her knees beside her nephew. He slumped against the wall and
there was blood everywhere. "I brought a healer," she looked into his
eyes and could see the pain. She glared up at the man A'kades held
"You tunnelsnake," she spat.

Silain began immediately to work on the downed rider who he knew by
reputation. He'd treated this one on multiple occasions. "A little bit
worse than usual eh J'ackt?" He smiled trying to hide his own alarm at
the wounds. There was so much blood. "I'm going to need more help," he
said to Timassa.

She nodded and stood. But before she ran for more help she stepped up
to the young man, balled up her fist and used every bit of her
dragonrider muscle to punch him intentionally in the solar plexus and
knock the wind out of him.

A'kades had just gotten the dazed culprit grabbed by the shoulders and
pinned so he couldn't lunge for himself or J'ackt. When the Healer
arrived, he said, "Tell me how bad J'ackt is."

He found himself wanting to hit the culprit again, but his focus had
been on keeping him from doing more harm. The greenrider's solid blow
to the man could be felt reverberating up into his arm. He found
himself approving of it.
