T'lin

T'lin

Excitement rippled through the Weyr as the dragons began to hum.
Tyselin dropped his pen and stood up. The other journeymen in the
workroom looked up, a few of them smiling at him. And despite doing
this so many times it _was_ exciting. Tyselin's heart raced as he said
goodbye and hurried down to the Candidate barracks.

It was chaos when he arrived. The newer Candidates dressed frantically
as if they were afraid the Hatching would start without them. The more
experienced ones pulled on their robes and lined up with a more
subdued energy. The dragons started humming well before the first egg
cracked, enough time for riders to fetch dignitaries and family
members, and therefore plenty of time to get dressed.

When everyone was ready, the weyrlingmasters led them outside to merge
with the line of girls coming out from the other side. There were more
than usual due to the Queen egg, lots of girls from holds and halls
pinning their hopes on a gold dragon.

As they stepped into the Hatching Grounds, it hit him like it did
every time. The hundreds of whirling eyes from the dragons perched
overhead, the Stands full of people, the golden mother watching
protectively over the eggs. The awe and excitement made Tyselin's head
buzz.

Even if he didn't find his lifemate today, it was still a wonderful
thing to be a part of, to watch Impression happen up close. To see his
friends' eyes light up when they joined minds with a dragon.

And his family would be here, so Tyselin could spend time at the feast
talking to his parents and many siblings. They never seemed to get
tired of cheering him on, but then again, who would pass up a chance
to ride a dragon and visit the Weyr?

The humming grew louder. Tyselin glanced around at his friends. Neria
was off by herself. Dessa was with the group of girls standing close
-- but not too close -- to the Queen egg. He smiled at her and
silently wished Dessa good luck.

Vatirel was nearby. A warm little flutter went through Tyselin when he
looked at him. They'd been Standing together since Vatirel came to
Dolphin Cove, and like every time Tyselin wished for him to find his
lifemate. And like every time, Tyselin wished it for himself, too.

Despite the dangers of Thread, despite meaning his crafting would
become little more than a hobby, Tyselin wanted this. To bond with a
dragon, to know a love unlike anything else on Pern.

The eggs were rocking now, the sound of humming vibrating into his
very bones. One egg cracked and then split wide open. A blue! Tyselin
focused on him as the little hatchling moved on unsteady legs. He was
near the back and had to make his way around the other eggs toward the
Candidates. He was ungainly and wet and yet so beautiful, too. A
lovely rich shade of azure, like the horizon on a bright, clear day.

}:I'm coming!:{ The blue moved faster.

The voice was clear over the noise around him and Tyselin realized it
was in his _head_. And the little blue was heading right toward him.
Tyselin's heart started pounding and he stepped forward. The hatchling
reached him and looked up.

**Are you mine?** Tyselin held his breath.

}:I found you!:{ The dragon's eyes became a dazzling whirl of rainbow
colors as love poured over Tyselin. His heart and mind filled so much
it felt like they were spilling over. There was another presence
inside his head and he would never, ever be alone.

Tyselin knelt and pulled the most wonderful creature on Pern into his
arms, pressing his face into the warm hide. }:I am Calaroth. I love
you so much.:{

Tyselin--no, T'lin-- was only distantly aware of announcing his
dragon's name. **I love you too.**

It felt like forever and only a moment. And then T'lin became aware he
was extremely hungry. }:I am hungry! Where is meat? I must have it.:{

"This way, little one." T'lin stood and guided his dragon toward the
buckets of chopped meat the weyrlingstaff had prepared. As he handed
the first bloody piece to Calaroth, T'lin realized the Hatching was
still going on.

"I'm going to miss the whole thing!" He said with a laugh. "If only
you weren't so impatient."

}:I could not wait for you.:{ Calaroth snapped up another piece,
chewing eagerly.

"But I did. I waited for you a very long time." Tears stung his eyes
and he rubbed Calaroth's head with his free hand.
