Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr

When the call came, Dessa put on her white candidate-robe and joined
the rest of them outside the Hatching Cavern. Her fingers tapped and
clenched nervously, her stomach was filled with vtols and she felt
slightly nauseous. She usually felt like this before major
performance. Once she got her violin and started to play, she was
alright. But today it wasn't a performance. She missed her violin.
Just holding it always made her feel better.
They were signaled to enter the Cavern. Dessa choose a place at the
back row of the female candidates who gathered around the golden egg.
Then the first egg cracked and she forgot her stage fright. She was
trying to keep an eye out for everything that went around her. She was
tracking one green hatchling when a gasp from the other girls told her
that gold egg was rocking and cracking.
After a particularly violent rocking motion, Santhiath pushed her way
out of the egg. She stepped delicately out of her egg and stopped to
gain her bearing. }: Where's my music? I want my music,:{ she looked
around and sniffed the air. One of the white-clad figures stepped too
close to her and she snarled. }: You're not her.:{ Then she found who
she was looking for and started marching across the Sands. One of the
white-clad figures didn't get out of her way quickly enough, so she
walked right over her. She was in a hurry, a stupid brown had just
knocked over hers! }: Dessa mine!:{ Santhiath cried out.
Dessa yelped but barely registered when the overager brown hatchling
pushed her over. For she was seeing herself a way Santhiath saw her:
not just a physical being, but a being of bright light, complex mental
patterns and music interwoven with it all. She tried later capture
that moment, that miracle of Impression, but never could convey it
correctly.
**Santhiath!** Dessa crawled to her, ignoring the burning sand. "I'm
fine, Santhiath", she assured her, wrapped one arm around the
Hatchlings neck and started to pick out pieces of eggshell from her.
Then there was lot of people fussing around them and the girl
Santhiath had knocked down.

Dessa was feeding Santhiath her first meal when her parents came to greet her.
"Dessa! Congratulations, you've made us so proud," her mother, so
tall, elegant and beautiful, came to hug her.
"Well done, daughter, I'm so happy for you," even her father couldn't
find anything wrong in Impressing a gold!
Santhiath snarled at her, not liking strangers so close to them.
**Hush, San, it's alright, this is my mother and father,** Dessa told
her. Santhiath's snarl had made Elliwa to take a step back.
"Thank you mother. I'm pleased you were able to come and see it. This
is Santhiath. Santhiath, meet my parents, Elliwa and Desskar."
}: Do they have food? No? Not interested, :{ Santhiath replied
imperiously. Dessa just grinned happily and fed her new piece of meat.
"I'm sorry, she's not interested in anything but food right now," she
told her parents.
Corowal was also coming to congratulate the new goldrider. "Cousin
Elliwa, I should have know it was your little girl who Impressed the
Gold," he greeted.
"My lord Corowal," Elliwa dropped into a graceful curtsy.
"My lord," Desskar also bowed.
"Lady Elliwa, holder Desskar," Corowal nodded at them.
"Congratulations on your daughter's Impression." He turned to look at
Dessa, who also curtsied.
"Congratulations, Dessa. You're apparently upholding the family's
traditions. You've give your family and Hold a great honour."
"Thank you, your lordship," Dessa replied and winced when Santhiath
butted her sore leg.
}:Food! :{
"Now, if you excuse me, I have a hungry hatchling to feed," she turned
her attantion back to feeding Santhiath.
"Of course, we will catch up you with better time," Corowal replied
and turned his attention to Dessa's parents. "Cousin Elliwa," he
offered his arm to her. "You must reserve a dance for me during the
Feast." He led her parents away.
