Candidate classes had ramped up again, of course, after Panitath had laid her clutch. And as such, Kedon had begun to see a few new faces here and there when they came to the Weyr on Search. Kedon had lived his whole life at the Weyr and really could not imagine what it must be like to suddenly find oneself in a completely new place, not knowing anyone. It had to be a bit overwhelming. If he wanted to help, of course, all he had to do was to be a friend.
"Hi," he said with a smile to one of the newcomers. "Welcome to Dolphin Cove. I'm Kedon." He held out his hand to the girl.
"Waylle," she smiled, a bit shyly. The enormity of the Weyr and the sheer number of people were a little daunting. The scariest part was being without her family, she'd never been anywhere without her father and siblings, and now here she was, on her own in a new place. **But, it's worth it if I Impress a dragon,** she told herself. "I didn't realize it was so big. I thought it wouldn't be much larger than Emerald Falls."
"I've never been outside," said Kedon. It was hard to imagine living in a small place like a Hold. "What's it like?" he asked cheerfully.
"It's well...." Waylle looked around and then gestured with her hands, "more square? It's just a large building, the core of which houses everyone. Then there's an outer wall that protects the main keep, and there's lots of cots and farms in the surrounding area. So there's a lot of people at Emerald Falls, it's just not," and she tilted her head back to look up at the sheer, cliff-face that the Weyr was set into, "so tall."
"Maybe someday, I'll see it all the time if I ride out on sweep," said Kedon. He smiled and looked up at the cliffs of the Weyr. To him, the sight meant home, so it warmed his heart. "Has anyone shown you around, where everything is?" he asked. "You can always ask me for help if you need it."
"I've been to the barracks and picked a cot, but that's it. I'm guessing that big opening over there," she pointed across the Weyrbowl, "is the Dining Cavern?"
"Yes, that one," said Kedon, pointing to the opening further right as they faced into the bowl, "is the Dining Cavern." He smiled and pointed at the opening closer to the center. "That one is the Hatching Grounds. And Panitath will eat you if you go in there." He grinned to show he was (mostly) joking.
Waylle smiled, a little, she wasn't that gullible, she had read about Weyrs and how things worked. That was the benefit of being a trader's daughter, she had access to many things. "Why don't we check out the Dining Cavern then? I wouldn't say no to something to eat."
Kedon's belly rumbled at the mention of food. "Me, either!" he said. He never would. It seemed the boy was growing two inches taller every week. "Panitath wouldn't really," he said, not wanting anyone to think he was speaking ill of his stepmother's dragon. "She's..." Well. Kedon would not say she was nice or sweet, exactly. She was not mean, either, of course. And he thought she liked him well enough, as long as he was respectful. And, of course, he always was. But it was difficult to really learn anyone's true disposition when they never really spoke to you.
"She's very noble." That was a good word.
"You've seen her up close?" Waylle asked.
"Oh, sure," said Kedon, though now he realized that he had awkwardly backed himself into a corner of sounding like a braggart. He blushed.
"My father is Cyradis's weyrmate. She's kind of like my mother." She was the closest thing he had to a mother as far as Kedon was concerned. He certainly loved her like a mother.
"Your dad is with the Weyrwoman?" Waylle asked in obvious awe of the boy's position. "Does that make you, like, a shoe-in for Impression?"
"I was scared people would think that," said Kedon, wrinkling his nose. "Cyradis said she didn't have any sway over who Impresses, so I didn't have to try to keep my distance from her while the eggs were on the Sands. I wouldn't ask her to do it, even if she could. I'd ask her not to." Kedon hated unfairness.
Waylle thought that was admirable of Kedon, others would probably have wanted their parents to try and help them, even if it was unfair. "So everyone gets chosen based on what the dragonets want? I guess that makes me feel like I might have a chance."
"Of course, you have a chance!" said Kedon with an encouraging smile. "The Searchers wouldn't have brought you in if you didn't. There's always more Candidates than eggs, but everyone has the same chance."
"You're right. I'm sure it will all work out, if not this time, then maybe the next." Waylle was starting to feel better about her decision to leave Emerald Falls and come to the Weyr to Stand, especially if everyone was as nice as Kedon.
