Description: Jeyme and K'ran work on wing hides
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 6 of Turn 9
"And you have to _decipher_ this?" Jeyme held up the Wing transfer
paper that was marked up with the most illegible hand writing she had
ever seen.
K'ran winced as he looked at it. "Yes," he said. "To figure out who is
transferring in and why they want to."
"Is there ever a time when you deny the request?" The greenrider asked
as she putt he piece of paper down and stretched, rolling her
shoulders. She'd been sitting with K'ran for a while going through
hides and papers, trying to learn the ins-and-outs of the hidework she
would be responsible for keeping.
"There are definitely times when I will want to say no. Usually it's
wing logistics. I try to keep the number balanced so it's not too
top-heavy on larger colors or else I find too much falls through the
gaps, so if I have 5 bronzeriders and a 6th asks for in, I would say
no," he said. "Or sometimes someone isn't ready for a different
altitude."
"Sometimes it could be something else like personal attachments. I
don't want weyrmates serving together in the wing. Or two people who
loathe each other. Of course, that requires knowing about those
attachments and that's not always possible."
"But it's not a deal breaker, having weyrmates in a Wing, right? Just
as long as one isn't in leadership over the other?" Jeyme asked for
clarification, after all, the Weyr had plenty of relationships and
only so many Wings to split up all the couples.
"It wouldn't be an absolute dealbreaker for me. After all, each couple
is going to be different. But every Wingleader's different in their
tolerance. If they had already been in different wings, why change to
be together, is what I wonder," he said.
"Can you make out whose name is on that and why they want to move?"
Jeyme scanned the letters, and then moved the paper closer to her face
and then back away again, as if to help her vision decipher the words.
"Looks like L'aetes, greenrider, wants to transfer to D'hol's Wing.
Reason being...." and here she shook her head. "I can't make out the
reason. You want to try?"
K'ran took the hide and frowned. "I hate when people say this," he
muttered. "L'aetes thinks that Carlioth needs 'more space to maneuver
to her fullest' and thinks that this wing is too low for her to
perform appropriately."
The greenrider rolled her eyes, "If you don't have space in the lower Wings there isn't any space the higher up you go." She'd flown in different altitudes and while each Wing had it's own unique features, fighting Thread was still fighting Thread.
"I think he thinks he's better than a wing of refugees. Not that we're all River Bluff, anymore. Part of the advantage of the clutch graduating is being able to mix the wings more," he said.
Jeyme couldn't disagree with K'ran, since she'd been back at Dolphin Cove she'd heard some of the murmurs about the River Bluff refugees, especially Rapids Wing since it was composed of so many former River Bluff riders. She didn't see how it made any difference, a dragoman was a dragoman, but she knew how competitive established Wings could be.
"What do you do with a request like that?" she asked.
"We need green pairs or else I'm worried about switchover, so I'm going to tell him we can re-evaluate in three months," K'ran said. "He may still insist then, in which case I'd let him go. But I think if he gives the wing a chance, it will be fine."
Jeyme gave a nod and sorted the application into the pile that would require further evaluation. The greenrider rubbed at her eyes, "Is it time for a dinner break yet?"
"It can be if you need one," he said. "After this there's the exciting time of sweep charts."
"Come on then, Wingleader, let's grab something to eat. You can tell me something personal and juicy about yourself while we're there, and I'll return the favor." She was mostly joking, although it would be nice to get to know her Wingleader on a more personal level.
He laughed and pushed back from the desk, thinking that she was going to be easy to work with. "I'll give you two stories. One about travel and one about myself, how's that?"
"That sounds like a deal, I'll do the same in return." Jeyme grabbed her riding jacket from the back of the chair.
