Description: D'hol and Jeyme see each other for the first time in a long time
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 3 of Turn 9
Seeing his son smile at his appearance was all D'hol needed to make
his day a better one. With a nod to the foster mother, who greeted him
with a ready smile and relaxed his expectations of yet another
difficulty, D'hol picked up Dheymin and grinned as the boy gave him a
tight hug. "Hey, buddy." He squeezed his son gently and bounced him in
his arms. "You have a good day?"
"Lorella, I forgot to leave this with you." Jeyme had just dropped
Dheymin off, and when she stepped back into the woman's weyr, she was
holding Dheymin's stuffed dragon, sewn by Jeyme herself out of an old
shirt of D'hol's. "Oh, hi," she hadn't expected to run into D'hol so
soon.
The wide smile on D'hol's face dropped immediately and his shoulder's
stiffened in response to Jeyme's voice. It was the first time he'd
heard or seen her in any close distance since she'd left when Dheymin
was an infant. His jaw tightened and he was prepared to turn away from
her, but Dheymin, sighting his mother immediately thrust his arms out
to her. "Mama! Mama!" Lips tight, D'hol set him down and let him go,
taking a step back as Dheymin rushed towards her.
It was an automatic response to drop to one knee and hug her son.
"Hey, silly," she smiled down at him, "you forgot your dragon." She
wiggled the doll, causing it's wings to flap back and forth.
"'umath!" Dheymin giggled and snatched the poor imitation for his
father's bronze.
"Yes, you can't go anywhere without your Yumath." She ran her fingers
through her son's hair, brushing it back out of his eyes.
There was no change in expression on D'hol's face. He showed neither
anger, irritation, or pleasure at Dheymin's chosen toy. Instead, he
didn't respond at all, remaining cool and aloof from their banter and
simply waited.
Jeyme straightened and met D'hol's eyes, "I apologize, I didn't mean
to interrupt your time." This was the closest she'd been to him in a
long, long time. He looked different than what she remembered, a
little grayer at the temples, and perhaps leaner in the face as well.
His frosty
demeanor, however, was exactly as she remembered it.
A single brow rising was his only response. He turned back to Dheymin
and crouched, swooping him up in his arms. He offered Dheymin a smile,
warmth finally returning to his eyes as he was shown the stuffed
dragon. "I see that. Looks a good deal like him, doesn't it?" He rose,
picking him up before turning to the foster mother. "I'll bring him
back after evening meal, if that's alright with you."
In the past Jeyme might have cowered, ducked back, or been hurt at the
dismissal, but she remained where she was, arms crossed over her
chest, lips curved into a small smile as she watched Dheymin. The boy
was truly very happy to see his father. It reaffirmed to Jeyme that
coming back to Dolphin Cove where father and son could be closer was
the best thing.
Lorella bounced Ayeme on her hip, and gave the bronzerider a kind
smile, "That'll be fine, sir."
He inclined his head to Lorella and moved past Jeyme without a word.
"Come on, lad. Yumath wants to see how much you've grown." He kissed
his son on the cheek and was rewarded with a kiss from the floppy
stuffed dragon in return.
"Bye Lorella," Jeyme waved to the foster mother, and then called to
D'hol's back, "and goodbye D'hol, it was nice seeing you too." He
might choose not to speak to her, but Jeyme was going to treat him
just as she did everyone else in the Weyr, after all, she had no
reason to act otherwise.
