Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 9 of Turn 9
}:Panitath's wishes to see you.:{ Ashareth informed Saidrene.
**What about?** Saidrene wondered, even as her feet changed direction
and steered her instead toward the Weyrwoman's office.
}:She didn't say.:{ The green didn't seem particularly alarmed or
interested, so Saidrene took that as a good sign that she hopefully
wasn't in trouble for anything. She was typically a rule follower but
she couldn't help but get nervous when the Weyrwoman called her in her
office.
The office door was open when she arrived, "You wanted to see me, ma'am?"
"Good afternoon Saidrene," Cyradis smiled. "Please have a seat."
Saidrene slid into the chair across from the Weyrwoman. She clasped
her hands together in her lap to hide her nerves.
"First of all I wanted to tell you you aren't in trouble. This is
about something that you should be aware of, alright?"
"Okay," Saidrene nodded and rubbed her palms over the tops of her
thighs. She couldn't imagine what Cyradis might want to tell her.
"I know you're friends with J'ackt." And by that she actually meant
more than friends which was her true concern. But she didn't think she
really needed to say that. "You may not know that he asked L'pin to
look into his history so he could find out if he had any other family.
It turns out he does. His mother was a dragonrider at Far Island but
she lost her dragon and became despondent. Then she just left the
Weyr." She could almost see the 'but why tell _me_ this' confusion but
she went on. "So then we found her family at Far Island and some other
information that led us to believe that the man who raised J'ackt
wasn't actually his father. We went to Dragonsfall and there we
interviewed your uncle K'yne." She left it there for a moment to see
if the young dragonrider would put the rest of the connection
together.
Saidrene's expression cleared, "Ah, yes, J'ackt told me about his
mother, and showed me the paper with K'yne's name on it. I told J'ackt
that he was my uncle, but... He's pretty set on not meeting him at
this point." The greenrider sighed a little, "Nothing is conclusive
right?"
"Well, from the descriptions of what happened back then and the fact
that Jenasome looked more like K'deren than K'yne." She shrugged.
"Your uncle didn't deny the possibility and J'ackt does look a great
deal like him. I think he actually is your cousin Saidrene."
"I am afraid of that as well," she said honestly. "But J'ackt won't
believe right now. I don't think he'll believe it until he meets
K'yne, and he's refusing to do that at the moment."
"Well, that's J'ackt for you," she smiled. "Contrary to the core." She
nodded. "I just wanted you to be aware of your relationship to him and
the issues of consanguinity relating to it." Saidrene had to know how
closely the Weyrwoman had to record all births and deaths in the Weyr.
After all her mother had been doing the job a very long time.
"Yes, I'm aware. I am very careful with J'ackt, with all men, my
mother..." she thought back to the pregnancy her mother had helped her
abort, "has taught me that. It's just, what are the odds that the one
person in the Weyr that I... Well... That one person might be related
to me?"
"It's difficult I know," she nodded her sympathy. "J'ackt is handsome
and a better person than he believes." She shook her head, she wasn't
Saidrene's mother but she felt a bit motherly to all her younger
riders to be honest. "Life is choices," she said. "We can care deeply
for someone who is bad for us." She half wondered if Saidrene would
pick up on who that was for her Weyrwoman. "But then, suddenly,
someone appears that gives a deeper and richer meaning to our lives."
She chuckled and lifted an eyebrow. "Think about your mother," she
said. "While she was here she had a good time with many different men
and didn't give R'enh a second look. But now they're in separate Weyrs
they seem to cling to one another exclusively." She shrugged. "Things
change."
Saidrene still had a hard time believing her mother was just exclusive
to R'enh, but it appeared to be the case. "No disrespect, Weyrwoman,
but it's easy to say that there are others out there when you have
already found a good person for yourself." J'ackt was all she had.
Cyradis almost chuckled, but only almost. "It took me a long time to
find K'deren," she said softly. "I'm no spring wherry," she smiled.
"But before you completely set your heart on J'ackt, know that he'll
make choices too and they won't always be what you want. You can never
control another person," she added seriously. "But you can also never
have children with him Saidrene. Never."
"I almost did," Saidrene found herself saying. "I was pregnant, but
mother made me abort it, I was in Candidacy, eggs were on the Sands.
She was afraid I would ruin my chances for Impression. She didn't tell
anyone, and neither did I." It had nearly killed Saidrene to abort the
baby, a baby she had wanted. She'd been mad, was still mad, at her
mother for talking her into it. "I guess she knew what was best, even
if she didn't know about J'ackt's parentage." Saidrene looked up and
met Cyradis's eyes, "I won't let it happen again."
**Well that would complicate things** she thought and was privately
relieved Saibra had been so wise with her daughter. "Thank you for
telling me" she nodded accepting Saidrene's statement. "Should you
wish to have a baby, we can arrange for an appropriate father," she
said. "You don't have to love him, but you will share parentage with
me for the records. Just know that if you get pregnant and don't know
who the father is, it must be assumed to be J'ackt's and aborted." She
knew this seemed harsh but she'd had much the same talk with other
young women over the turns. It was her job as the Weyrwoman to oversee
the bloodlines of people as well as dragons in her charge.
"I understand," Saidrene said quietly. It was probably the best for
them all if he only saw Alina anyways. There was no bloodline
complication there.
"I'm sorry Saidrene," she said. "I know that wasn't something you
wanted to hear."
The young greenrider raised her shoulders in a little shrug, "It is
what it is, I guess. Thank you for the talk."
"Of course," and Saidrene? "If you can, try and gently help J'ackt understand."
