D'hol swirled the amber liquid around in his glass as he went over the
new additions assigned to his wing. At the knock on his door frame, he
looked up, then gestured K'deren to come in. "Come in, please." He
took a sip, put the glass down and frowned at the list. "I assume you
have been given this as well?"
"If you mean the list of transfers," K'deren held a small bundle of
hides in his hand. "This is what I managed to get from the records
room for the few than had been here before."
"Yes." He waved at the seat near the desk. "It looks like we're going
to have to rearrange our nines." He frowned. "Do any of them look as
though they'd be good wingthird material? Most look rather young."
"Kerga might be worth a look," suggested K'deren as he took the seat.
He flicked through his hides. "Here we go, she's 23 turns, impressed
here about six or seven turns ago, but followed a weyrmate to River
Bluff."
D'hol took the hide and examined it. "She's a possible. Do we know if
her weyrmate survived?" He pulled out another hide. "I also wanted to
consider offering the position to Ciara. What are your thoughts on
her?"
"I think he did," K'deren said as he thought about his father's
weyrmate for the role. "As far as I know at least, and I think they
were lucky, their baby girl came through as well. You might be right
about Ciara, but if I were you I'd speak to my father as well as her,
just to make sure that they can cope with it, and getting my youngest
siblings settled."
D'hol pursed his lips and slowly nodded. "Good point." He leaned back,
eyeing K'deren. "Would you prefer to speak to him? You know him and
her best, and it would be within your role as Wingsecond. "
"I could do it," the brownrider said after taking a moment to think.
"Leave it with me and I'll speak to him over the next day or so,
there's no fall for what, three days?"
Glancing at the schedule on his desk before he answered, D'hol nodded.
"Right. None for three days." He took a sip of his drink and sat it
down. "I'll speak to Kerga in the next few days as well. See if she's
interested."
K'deren nodded. "La'zdin might also be an option as well." The
bluerider was steady, in his early forties and had been
Weyrlingmaster's third for a long while.
"That is a very good idea." He preferred older, more experienced
riders for any position of authority. "Thank you for pointing him
out." He paused and looked at K'deren for a long moment, considering
him. He'd never brought up Cyradis between them, keeping their
conversations based on their wing duties; D'hol appreciated that.
"K'deren, if I might say something to you." He took another sip of his
drink, then leaned back in his chair. "You're one of the best
wingseconds I've ever worked with. Thank you for that."
"Thank you," said K'deren after a moment. It wasn't what he was
expecting to hear, especially since he knew that his weyrmate was
always an unspoken issue between them. "As Wingleaders go, you're not
so bad yourself."
D'hol inclined his head in thanks, then lifted his glass in an almost
salute. "You're a better man than me, it seems." There was neither
bitterness nor rancor in his voice; if anything it was simply tired
resignation. He tossed the drink back and set down the empty glass
upside down. "I'll see you in the morning, K'deren. We'll continue
working on finding a wingthird then."
"Until tomorrow," K'deren got to his feet. "I should probably go and
collect my son from his foster mother before he screams the place
down."
"Tomorrow then. Goodnight, K'deren." D'hol didn't move from his chair,
simply turning his glass against the top of his desk.
