Cyradis stepped down from the blue dragon, into the cool morning at
Dragonsfall, with a smile and a pat. "Thank you for the lovely ride,"
she smiled up into a whirling eye.
Saibra met L'pin and Cyradis out on her ledge, a smile on her face for
her favorite Weyrwoman. "Cyradis, L'pin, welcome. Come in and warm up.
I have us some breakfast treats in my office."
"Saibra," Cyradis smiled back and took her hand while they went
inside. "It's so nice to see you. Things going well here?"
Chaneth had preened at the Weyrwoman's praise, then flown off to sit
and flirt with some green dragons while he waited for their meeting to
be over.
"Thank you for the breakfast treats, Weyrwoman Saibra," L'pin said as
he headed inside. "I should have visited Dragonsfall more during the
winter, I miss the cold sometimes."
"Well, we have plenty of cold, so feel free to come any time." Saibra
grinned, eyes crinkling at the bluerider. The Weyrwoman's office was
warm, and just as she'd said there were a couple trays of breakfast
pastries and fruit along with klah and juice.
"And we have plenty of beach." Cyradis smiled back with a wink. She
poured herself a cup of klah and picked up some fruit. "We've also got
some news and some questions. But I'll let L'pin tell you the story."
L'pin took a cup of the klah and settled into the chair before
launching into the story. "I began to look into J'ackt's history a few
months ago, at his request of me. He was curious about why his father
was banished from the Hold. To find out more information, I visited
the Harper Hall and Emerald Falls Hold, reading through their records.
While there, I discovered more about his mother."
The bluerider took a sip of the klah before continuing. "His mother
was actually a former dragonrider. She Impressed at Far Island, then
lost her dragon. She left to Emerald Falls Hold, where eventually she
married Jenasom and had J'ackt. Only, it turns out that he might not
be the boy's father…
"The father might be a rider who is assigned here. That's why we
wanted to speak to you. You know J'ackt, and you would know the boy's
father better than us. Any insight you're willing to provide in how to
handle this would be appreciated."
Cyradis looked expectantly at Saibra, "His mothers name was Ocktima.
Do you remember her?"
Saibra wracked her brain over the name, but came up with nothing.
She'd lived in three different Weyrs over the course of her life, and
sometimes names and faces just ran together. "You said the father
lives here. Who is he?"
L'pin checked the notes on the hide he held. "K'yne of brown Arinoth."
The words washed over Saibra like a bucket of cold water. K'yne was
J'ackt's father. How in the name of Faranth was _that_ possible? Her
K'yne? **Well, not _mine_,** she reasoned with herself, the brownrider
got on her nerves most of the time, and she'd never forgiven him for
what happened after K'fel's death but.... J'ackt's _father?!_
"And K'yne doesn't know?" She finally managed to ask.
"Everything we've found about the matter says that he ran into Ocktima
by chance one time and that's when it happened. Jenasom may have
suspected but didn't know. If K'yne never saw her again, there's no
reason for him to know," the bluerider said.
Saibra's thoughts were spinning. Should she remember an Ocktima? She
had been pretty occupied by K'fel and having Saidrene back then. "Does
J'ackt know this information? Or did you come to find out about K'yne
first?"
"No he doesn't at this point. Though he is aware of his mother's history."
Cyradis had seen a reaction in her friend even if she wasn't aware of
exactly what it might be. Then it hit her. "Wait, isn't K'yne your
former weyrmate's brother?" She thought she might have remembered that
one correctly. No wonder the name had sounded familiar.
"Yes, K'yne is Saidrene and Kaibren's uncle." She reached up and
rubbed the bridge of her nose. **Feck, if life had gone differently,
J'ackt would have been raised as my _nephew_..... I think I'm going to
be sick.** Wait, that made Saidrene and J'ackt first cousins. She
wanted to laugh at the irony, but instead she schooled her expression
behind a sip of klah.
L'pin followed the goldriders' exchange with interest. It was
interesting that Saibra knew K'yne reasonably well, from before he'd
transferred here it sounded like.
"Timassa had told us that she suspected it was K'yne who fathered
J'ackt. We wanted to know what you knew about K'yne and what you
thought we should say to him. What we should tell him about this."
"She's a greenrider at Far Island and Ocktima's sister. I guess they
had a relationship prior to Ocktima's loss of her dragon. It wasn't
long after she'd seen K'yne again at a gather that she wrote her
sister cutting off all contact with the Weyr." She shrugged. "What do
you suggest?"
"He'll want to know, he's a very responsible man. He's treated Kaibren
and Saidrene like his own children ever since K'fel's death. To find
out that he has a child of his own..." Except, J'ackt was no child,
and he carried Pern's largest chip on his shoulder. Still, knowing
K'yne the way she did, he would try to be the father he'd missed out
on being.
"Would you like to be there when we tell him?" L'pin asked Saibra,
thinking that her knowledge of K'yne might help the man absorb this
better.
She considered it for a moment. "No, I don't think I should be. It
feels like too much of an ambush to have us all three there. I'll
check on him after you've told him."
"Alright," Cyradis nodded and reached a hand out to softly touch
Saibra's arm. "Where do you think we should meet him? We can't exactly
just walk up to him."
"I can call him here, the conference room is open." She gestured to
the door that connected to the conference room she and K'reyel shared.
"That sounds good to me," L'pin said. He refilled his klah cup and
took another pastry from what Saibra had generously set out for them,
thinking he'd fortify while they waited for K'yne to arrive.
"Thank you Saibra," Cyradis half smiled. She didn't think she needed
to go through all the complications to the other woman's life this
would entail but just reached out to put a hand on her shoulder before
turning to follow L'pin.
"Well," she said when she got into the council chamber. "This may be
quite interesting."
"I hope it's not too much of a shock for him, finding out he had a
child he didn't know about. I'd be shocked, if it was me," L'pin said.
