When the Weyrleaders arrived in the Hatching Cavern there was already a large crowd, which was rapidly growing as dragonriders zipped in, dropped off visitors, and zoomed back out to pick up more. Chioneth was a brilliant beacon of gold in the corner, her eyes whirling as she surveyed the audience and her eggs.
"I wonder whether she'll be happy with the choices her hatchling will make today," mused K'reyel as he seated his Weyrwoman.
The hums of dragons made the very stone that Saibra stood on vibrate. The way the dragons always knew the moment a Hatching was ready to take place never ceased to amaze the Dragonsfall Weyrwoman.
"Go get your good clothes on. I will see you at the feast later." Saibra shooed Kaibren away and then took the time to change clothes herself. She had a nicer dress for later that she would change into between the Hatching and the start of the feast.
She nearly collided with K'reyel when she stepped into the corridor. "I was hoping today would be the day."
"It looks like she finally got fed up of Erdenth not getting her the right herdbeasts," the Weyrleader joked. He had made an effort with his appearance though, finding his almost best tunic. "I came to escort you to your seat."
His courtesy never ceased to amaze Saibra, so different than G'nir was K'reyel. "Thank you," she tucked her hand into the bend of his arm.

Saibra smiled, unable to stop the feelings of pride she felt when she looked at Chioneth.
When white-robed figures began filing out onto the Sands there was a mad scramble in the audience as people claimed their seats. A hush fell over the crowd as the dragon hums increased.
Saibra recognized all of the Candidates except for the few that had joined in in the past couple of days before the Hatching. The Candidates that were refugees from River Bluff seemed to stand together in loose knit group: Jayonne, Tarley, and Erivana. There were also those there that Saibra often around the Weyr such as Samlan and Urtain, she recognized them because they weren't too much older than her Kaibren.
"That girl, over at the back," K'reyel gestured carefully. "She barely looks old enough to be out there." The candidates had been well drilled though, and they formed a loose semi-circle around the edge of the sand, watching expectantly as slowly one or two eggs began to rock/
Her eyes zeroed in on the girl that K'reyel mentioned, and sure enough, she was so incredibly petite, but her pointed chin was raised in determination.
The first egg to break was exactly what you always wanted as Weyrleaders, a bronze. Saibra smiled and joined the crowd in cheering as the chubby, honey-bronze dragonet lurched across the Sands toward the waiting group of candidates.
Several boys tried to step forward, but the bronze didn't hesitate to swat them out of his way, until he reached his new rider, who was hanging back rather hesitantly.
}:You could have met me halfway, J'nne, honestly.:{ Tribeth huffed.
The pair were soon led off the Sands by some Weyrlingstaff.
The next egg cracked, revealing a fine and delicate featured, yet large brown hatchling. He seemed to be brimming with confidence as he broke free, taking one last piece of his shell into his maw. Scanning the sands, he seemed to set his mind on a boy who's hair seemed to match the colour of his hide.
}:This is for you, S'lan,:{ he announced, dropping the shell at the boy's feet. }:Take this, and put food where it came from.:{
**Bronze and brown, a very good start.** Saibra thought as a green and blue simultaneously sought out their riders, both Impressing to boys.
The blue found his rider in a young boy, Urtain, whose brown skin was nearly the same shade as his brown hair. Urtain and his new lifemate seemed to be staring at one another, in a very quiet, thoughtful moment.
}:It felt like so long in that shell. I am so glad to finally be with you, U'ain.:{ Ibrith sighed dreamily, his sky blue tail swishing across the sand.
Saibra felt herself wiping a tear from the corner of her eye, **Well, isn't that sweet?** She responded to Chioneth, who had relayed the blue's words, along with Urtain's elided name.
As always, Saibra felt the Hatching slipping away too quickly, after so many days of waiting in anticipation, it was almost over.
Down on the Sands, a mottled blue egg split, releasing a sleek, seagreen dragonet who happily shook her the remaining pieces of her shell and set out looking for her rider. Just behind her, another dragonet burst from her shell, this one a sage green in shade, and eyed the group of waiting Candidates possessively.
}:There are so many people in the way.:{ The seagreen dragonet complained, beginning to get agitated as the minutes began to slip by.
She swung her head against a lean girl, Tarley, knocking the Candidate to the ground. }:You're in the way!:{
The sage dragonet screamed in outrage and panic. }:Don't touch my rider!:{ Monicath flung herself onto the seagreen's back, her talons digging in to her clutchmates soft hide.
}:Erivana! Help me!:{ Seryth cried in pain as she tried to shake Monicath off.
"Oh no," Saibra's hand automatically went to K'reyel's. Hatching accidents happened, but Saibra was never prepared for them.
Weyrlingstaff on the ground loosely circled the interlocked green pair, but it was Chioneth who stuck her large, golden snout between them and let out a rumbling growl.
}:Dragonets,:{ she spoke in a hiss of authority, }:contain yourselves. Both of your riders are fine.:{
The command from their Queen could not be defied, and so Monicath sulked over to Tarley, who was waiting to help her off the Sands.
Seryth, who had ichor on her back from the talon wounds, required more assistance to leave the Sands, her worried rider, Erivana, was left to anxiously follow at her dragonet's side.
}:The Weyrdragonhealer is preparing to see Seryth. It's not crippling.:{ Chioneth assured Saibra.
Saibra exhaled a sigh of relief, "Well, that wasn't exactly the note I wanted the Hatching to end on." She murmured to K'reyel.
"No, no it wasn't." He squeezed Saibra's hand gently before letting it go. "But Chioneth had things under control, and Erdenth would have backed her up."
As the new dragonet and rider pairs left the sands, K'reyel got to his feet, offering his hand to Saibra. "I don't envy the Weyrlingstaff with those two though, they could well be trouble."
"You're right," Saibra said, taking K'reyel's hand and standing. Now it was time to shake off the end of the Hatching, and go put on a good face for those visiting.
