Date: month 12, day 17 of Turn 8
Jeyme felt numb on the inside. She'd done her crying, and she'd made
her decision. Quinneth had requested a meeting for her with Cyradis,
and she had felt relief when her Wingleader had been available. Her
facial features were schooled, and there was a certainty in her green
eyes that she knew what she was doing.
"Weyrwoman?" She knocked and stepped into Cyradis's office.
Despite her pounding head Cyradis pasted a welcoming smile on her
face. She might of seen things she'd rather not have seen but that
wasn't really any of her business. Nor did she feel any desire to mess
with the lives of her wingriders.
"Come in Jeyme," she said.
"Thanks for meeting with me," Jeyme came in and sat across from the
Weyrwoman. "I wanted to talk to you about putting in a transfer
request to Far Island."
"I'm sorry to hear that Jeyme," immediately she felt guilty knowing
they'd had a little bit of a strained relationship for quite awhile.
Of course she knew why and had tried to make certain she didn't step
into the other woman's territory even by accident. No matter how she
felt about K'deren or the wonderful relationship they had, memories
were sometimes difficult to overcome.
"Are you quite sure?"
"Yes, I am quite sure. I haven't told D'hol yet. He doesn't even know
that I am aware of him and Kapera. He's hidden it from me for the past
few days, not even hinting that something might have occurred." Jeyme
wasn't sure if she was more upset over his actions or the fact he'd
been walking around as if nothing had happened.
"I left the Hold and became a dragon rider because I didn't want to be
some holders doormat of a wife, and yet now I find that I have become
a bronzerider's doormat weyrmate instead." She shook her head, telling
Cyradis the thoughts that had been running through her head ever since
Kapera had let the truth slip. "I want to go somewhere where I can
stand on my on two feet, make decisions for myself and not worry about
losing a man because of it."
Cyradis certainly could empathize though she knew D'hol cared about
Jeyme he'd made his bed and would have to sleep without Jeyme in it.
"I understand," she said. Her own thoughts and feeling on the matter
didn't really apply but she wasn't extending any sympathy to the
Wingleader. "And what about Deyhmin? Have you said anything to either
of his fathers?"
"I cannot leave my son behind. I will be taking him with me. I plan
telling D'hol this evening." She was sure it would not be a pretty
conversation but she was prepared and determined. She would not let
herself be bullied into changing her mind.
Cyradis nodded once. "Good girl," she said. "Never allow yourself to
be separated from your children." She spoke from experience though
Jeyme might not realize it.
"Jeyme," she dropped her formal posture and leaned forward on her
forearms. "For whatever difficulties you've experienced here, I am
very sorry for being any part of them. It was never my intent." **Even
if it was against my will.** "If any one here understands what you're
going through, it's me."
"Thank you for understanding. I know some people won't, because this
is the Weyr, but I am holdbred and I've felt like I have worked really
hard to adapt to Weyr culture. This just isn't one of those things I
can sweep under the rug." She lifted her shoulders a bit. "And I
shouldn't have to... I shouldn't have to settle for whatever leftovers
D'hol will give me. I want more."
She thought of the wondrous moment when she'd first met K'deren. "I
think you deserve the best and shouldn't settle for anything less. And
I know you can find it." Cyradis wasn't quite as limiting in
relationships as Jeyme obviously was. But her heart belonged solely to
her Weyrmate and everyone knew that. She did sleep with N'vanik now
and then but he was her Weyrleader and she wanted to keep him that
way. There were no tender feelings between them and she didn't
confuse exercise with love. But Jeyme was Hold raised and young. She
had yet to find that balance in her mind.
"Find someone who feels the same as you Jeyme," she said softly. "It
will be almost impossible to find in a bronzerider though. Brown is
likely your best bet." Her heart went out to the younger woman. "For
what its worth, I'm sorry to lose you. But D'hol is an ass to let you
go."
She pulled over a prewritten transfer, filled in Jeyme's name, signed
it and handed it to her.
