Lanniya grinned at Cyradis as she showed her the ring. "And he asked
me. I didn't have to ask him. Isn't it wonderful?" The young girl was
gushing with happiness, clearly thrilled at the recent developments.
"N'vanik will let him come here, won't he? I mean, we could always use
another good strong brownrider and..."
Lanniya's voice dropped off abruptly and her eyes glazed over as a
sudden onslaught took over. Her hands began trembling before she
clapped them over her ears and let out a shriek just before the
keening began.
"Oh I'm sure..." Cyradis started but then the smile dropped from her
face. "Lanniya?"
Panitath screamed defiance }:Much death:{ She began her own creel of pain.
"Lanniya," Cyradis grabbed the younger girl to support her. "What's happening?"
"Vilarth and Lenala...gone! Rocks, water... oh, Faranth, some of the
dragons are screaming." Tears streamed down her face as images found
her brain. "River Bluff.....the Weyr..." A sob erupted from her and
she clung to Cyradis. "Dragons are dead. So many..."
Other dragons added their voices to the dirge that rose from the Weyr
and Cyradis held Lanniya in her arms like one of her own children as
she tried to comfort her. "Breathe Lanniya," she said softly. Though
for truth she was in shock at the loss of the beautiful weyrwoman and
her lifemate. "Oh no," she said. "Rocks? Water? What happened?"
Lanniya's legs wobbled as she shook her head. "Its all jumbled in my
head." She pressed the heel of her palm to her brow and pressed as
though that would ease the tide that whipped through it. "It's bad. I
just know it's really bad." She swallowed and peered up at the older
woman, her face grief stricken. "We have to go. They need help." Her
eyes widened. "A'dryn. F'lyn, Y'gel...A'kades! I have to go and make
sure they're okay! And K'ran! I have to make sure that he's still..."
Her face paled. "It was my home..."
"Yes I know," Cyradis said quickly. "And you have to go, but not like
this." She shook her head to clear it and leaned away from the girl
slightly. "We have to organize and get some crafters and supplies to
take with us to help."
She nodded and struggled to wipe at her face with shaking fingers.
"Okay...okay. Uhm..but we really have to hurry. Uh..I don't know what
we need." She sounded a bit lost, but was trying to think, to find
some way to help. "Um..blankets and...healers and food..I think.."
Cyradis nodded and thought quickly. "I need to stay here and make sure
we're communicating and preparing anything they'll need. I need to
talk with N'vanik about covering their territory or a part of it for
the next 'fall. You're a goldrider Lanniya and your lifemate was
hatched there. The dragons will look to you. They're going to need
you. Talk to the Weyrleader as soon as you can and then let us know
what they need. Take your brown rider and at least three more riders
with you."
Lanniya nodded, trying to take it all in, already feeling the weight
of the unaccustomed responsibility. But it was far too important for
her to try to fight that weight. "We need some Healer supplies
definitely. I can go and see what they need right away with our
riders, then...um...send someone back with a list of what all they
need." Her brow furrowed. "I'll take K'ale and um...R'enh, since
N'vanik has to work with you as much as he can, but he's second and
N'vanik trusts him." Her brow furrowed. "Uhm...I need another
bronzerider, just in case." She bit her lip.
"Of course," she replied. "R'enh is a good choice and Mnoranth will
keep Anaeryth safe. Just be certain not to argue with him if he says
it's time to go. Do you understand? We need you safe, Pern needs you
safe."
"Yeah. I won't." She swallowed. "Who else should I take? That you
won't need and can help?"
"How about J'ackt and your sister?" Cyradis felt the young bronzrider
could benefit from seeing the devastation and helping the injured.
Pierka's green was fast and could bring messages and passengers as
needed.
"I need to talk to N'vanik," she added after a moment.
Not thinking and just grateful for advice, Lanniya nodded. "Sure. I'll
contact their dragons and get them assembled right away. We need to
get there fast to help however we can." Lanniya slipped her ring back
on and hurriedly shrugged into her jacket. "I'll send word to Panitath
right away if I can reach her. If I can't I'll send Pierka with news
and a list of supplies." She nodded and hurried out of the room, her
mental voice calling out for the dragons and the riders she had
selected to go with her.
"Where is N'vanik?" Cyradis turned and walked toward his weyr. She
queried her lifemate as she began to run.
}:He is gone to River Bluff for his egg:{
"Oh no, Nisheyl"
}:They are safe. They return:{
"Alright," she stopped and leaned against the wall for a moment.
Pressing her finger to her temples she longed to be back in the trees
with K'deren. But she wasn't going to show any sign of weakness to the
people and dragons who depended upon her. Or to anyone else for that
matter. With the sole exception of her Weyrmate.
