A New Perspective

Writers: Heather
Date Posted: 10th June 2017

Characters: R'nar, Tamren
Description: R'nar and Iorath fly sweeps after Threadfall.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 5 of Turn 8

'Fall had been long and grueling, and for most of the Wing it was over, but not for R'nar and Iorath. Today they had sweep duty afterward for the first time since being promoted to Cyclone Wing and R'nar was a little... nervous. His Wingleader wasn't the easiest man to please and his Wingsecond was his mother's weyrmate, so he didn't want to screw anything up.

}:We won't mess up. I know what burrows are, and I know how to fix them.:{ Smoke curled up from Iorath's bronze muzzle as he broke off from the rest of the Wing, which would be returning to the Weyr, and dropped in altitude so that he could scan over the areas where the ground crews from Emerald Falls were working.

R'nar understood how important ground crews were to a successful Threadfall, but seeing them down there made him even more grateful that he got to fight Thread from the neckridge of his dragon.

Iorath scanned the landscape with keen eyes, and back-winged sharply, }:I found one.:{ The bronze flew toward the piece of land, while R'nar signaled the ground crews working. They would need one of the flamethrowers to properly clear out the inside of the burrow without damaging the rest of the fertile ground around it.

Once Iorath had landed, R'nar unhooked the clips from his riding belt and jumped down. Walking over to the burrow, he grimaced at the writhing, steaming mess that Thread had caused.

"Over here!" R'nar called, when he saw the first man from the ground crew crest the knoll. Pulling off his helmet, R'nar shoved his riding goggles up on top of his head, pushing his curly hair back from his ash-smudged face.

"Ugh, that's a gross one, isn't it?" The ground crewman shuddered as he came to a stop by the burrow.

"No doubt." R'nar didn't say aloud that the sight of the burrow made him feel nauseous.

Iorath's head appeared over R'nar, his eyes whirling with curiosity as he studied the man and his contraption.

"Let's take care of this then." The holder pointed the nozzle of his HNO3 tank and released the chemical down into the burrow.

"Just like that, huh?" R'nar asked, as curious as his dragon.

"Yeah, it's better than burning, burning can cause more damage." The holder shifted the HNO3 tank on his back as he put the nozzle back up. "Tamren, by the way," he said, extending his arm.

R'nar took Tamren's arm in greeting, "R'nar, and this is Iorath."

Tamren tipped his head to R'nar and Iorath, "Thank you for your service."

"Thank you as well, we need you guys down here on the ground as much as you need us in the air." R'nar had expected a bit more hostility from Tamren since the holders of Emerald Falls and the dragonriders of Dolphin Cove weren't on the best of terms as of late.

"Well said," Tamren agreed.

"Well, we'd better get back into the air, we have some more ground to cover." Iorath was still eyeing the burrow, now effectively eradicated.

Tamren nodded, looking up at Iorath with open interest. "Of course, just signal next time and we'll go handle it. No need to tire you two out landing repeatedly."

R'nar inclined his head, "Will do." Turning on his heel, R'nar climbed back up to Iorath's neckridge

}:How did that thing kill the burrow?:{ Iorath asked as his rider clipped himself back into the harness.

**I honestly don't know. I mean, they talk about it in Weyrling class, but seeing it done and understanding how it works are two different things.** R'nar had a new appreciation for the holders as Iorath took them back to the skies, and he hoped, based on his conversation with Tamren, that they also would get over the old accident in the past, and regain their appreciation for the Dolphin Cove dragonriders.
