Description: A tithe out of the ordinary.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 10, day 9 of Turn 8
Chaysea didn't get mad very often, her life before the Weyr had been
filled with disappointments and tough situations, so she was use to
keeping a cool head and thinking through things logically. Today,
however, she was receiving the second set of tithes from one of their
Holds and for the second time in a row it contained fruits and
vegetables that had spoiled while on their journey to the Weyr.
It had taken some time for word to trickle out to some of the farthest
parts of their territory that a new Headwoman was in charge at Dolphin
Cove. Was this their way of testing her to see if they could get away
with keeping the best of their harvests for themselves and sending the
Weyr what remained?
"Don't unpack these crates." She snarled at the drudge who was helping
her go through the tithes. Slinging the soft redfruit back into its
crate, she hoisted it up, her anger lending her strength,
and strode off toward the Weyrwoman's office.
Fortunately for her the door was open and Cyradis inside, "Weyrwoman,"
she greeted, her tone more clipped than she intended.
Cyradis cocked her head slightly and put down the pen in her hand. She
recognized an issue in the other woman's voice even if it was only one
word. "Yes Chaysea," she inquired.
Chaysea set the crate down, a little more forcibly than she normally
would have, and then lifted one of the spoiled fruits out, "This is
the second time in a row we have received bad produce in a tithe."
"Same train Master or different ones?" Cyradis rose to look inside the crate.
"Different." Chaysea reported, running a thumb over the fruit in her
hand with a frown.
She shook her head and sighed. "Not good," she said. Fingering an
obviously ground 'picked' fruit. "Some of it could be canned but..."
her voice trailed off.
"The first time it happened I just gave them the benefit of the doubt
that maybe some things just didn't keep on the wagon ride here but
now..." Chaysea shook her head.
"Do you think it's deliberate? Organized?" Cyradis was puzzled as to
why any holders would actually jeopardize their own safety for some
sort of revenge on the Weyr. Whether or not they felt issues regarding
J'ackt this whole sentiment was steam rolling and growing in it far
reaching effects. Her eyes hardened. "We'll just have to see about
that."
Chaysea sighed, "I don't know." She tapped the hold name printed on
the crate, "This comes from a long distance out, I would like to think
they just don't realize it's spoiling by the time it reaches the main
hold and then travels here but.... I guess we won't know the answer to
that unless sometimes takes a trip there."
"So hopefully this is just a coincidence and not evidence of a general
resentment by the holders. At least I'm hoping that's the case."
Cyradis echoed the headwoman's sigh. "So do we want to make
preserves?"
"I suppose that would be the best use of these, it's better than
nothing." Chaysea admitted, liking the Weyrwoman's suggestion.
"Some of it could be also macerated into a warm compote for dessert or
breakfast over the next few days." She picked up a particularly bad
piece of fruit. "I'm sure you've already made your displeasure known
to the train managers?"
"I'm afraid there was no avoiding it, my face expressed my thoughts
before I could reign it in." Chaysea confessed, pursing her lips a
little as she tucked her bangs behind her ear.
"Well then," she nodded. "I'm sure if it's just a mistake they'll be
more careful next time. You're documenting these deliveries and their
condition I'm sure. I'd like to report this to the various Lords if it
becomes any more widespread."
Chaysea hefted the crate back up, "Yes, ma'am. Well, I'll just get
these down to the kitchens then. Thank you for your advice."
"Thank you for bringing it to me Chaysea," she said as the woman
prepared to leave. Thinking how the former headwoman might have
handled it she was truly thankful for the working relationship she had
with Chaysea. "I'll update the records," she smiled. "Come back for
tea later?"
"I'd like that," she returned the Weyrwoman's smile before leaving the
office to return the crate and oversee the rest of the unpacking.
