Benamil

Benamil

"You could just stay, you know? We have need of beastcrafters here and no one would think twice about who you date." Chaysea said as she watched Benamil pack.

Benamil paused and looked up at Chaysea, "You can't imagine how tempting that offer is but... Amber Hills is my home, I have to go back and try to make it work." He stuffed a folded shirt into his bag. "Thanks again for making arrangements to get me here and for being understanding."

Chaysea had been raised at Amber Hills so she understood completely the culture and way of thinking there, "The Weyr has changed my mind about a lot of things. Life isn't as black and white as Holders would like to think."

"Only two other people besides you knows about me," Benamil closed the flap on his bag and sat down on the bed. "It was nice telling someone who didn't make me feel bad about it."

"Hey, no one has the right to judge you for how you feel." Chaysea thought back to the day Benamil had come to Dolphin Cove.

**Flashback**

"Benamil," Chaysea smiled as the son of Benaroy was helped down by the dragonrider who had transported him.

Benamil slung his bag over his shoulder and smiled at the Headwoman, "Chaysea, thank you for arranging this," he motioned toward the dragon and his rider.

"Of course, what are childhood friends for?" She smiled and motioned for Benamil to follow her. "You didn't say in your letter why you needed to come so quickly."

"You never know when letters might get intercepted," Benamil said as he followed Chaysea into her office and took a seat.

Taking her chair, Chaysea wondered what kind of information could be so important that Benamil wouldn't trust it in a letter, "Well, I'm all ears if you need to talk. I know how to keep secrets." As Headwoman she was was privy to quite a few things that could be considered confidential.

Benamil hesitated, but he'd known Chaysea his entire life, "I've come to realize that I have feelings... Feelings for another man, Arion, in fact, you know him."

Chaysea's eyebrows shot up into her hairline. She did know Arion since she had been Headwoman of the Vintner Hall before taking the position at Dolphin Cove.

"You're gay?" She blurted the question in her surprise.

"It would seem so." He sighed, waiting for her disgust to come out as it had with Arion.

She couldn't believe it. As a Son of Benaroy, Benamil had always been popular when they were kids, and there had been plenty of girls flocking around him, hoping for marriage someday.

"Does Arion know?" she asked.

"Yes, I told him and he reacted as you would imagine."

Chaysea winced, yes, she could imagine, "I'm sorry."

Benamil shrugged and swallowed past the knot in his throat, "What's done is done."

"Well, you've come to a good place to get away for a while. The beach can solve anything that ails you." Chaysea smiled.

"You mean," Benamil looked up, "I can stay?"

"Benamil," Chaysea leaned forward in her chair, "I am the Headwoman of a Weyr. I've had to adapt an open mind since I've lived here. I've come to realize that it doesn't matter who you like, it doesn't change the person that you are." The Headwoman stood, "Now, let me show you to the room I have for you."

**End Flashback**

"Remember, the door is open if you need to come back, but I hope you get everything worked out at home." Chaysea said as the young dragonrider transport landed in front of them.

Benamil hugged Chaysea, "Thanks again."

"If Arion doesn't want you he's a fool." Chaysea whispered in his ear, earning a chuckle from the beastcrafter.

"I'll try to remember that." Benamil wasn't sure what his next steps would be when he got back to Amber Hills but it was time to reclaim his life.
