Description: R'nar receives his riding gear.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 8 of Turn 8
"When I call your name if you will step forward and I will give you your riding gear. Make sure to try it on and let me know if anything doesn't fit correctly. You'll want to be comfortable in this as you'll be wearing in for your flights." Chaysea instructed the group of gathered Weyrlings.
It seemed like a long time coming, and maybe it wasn't a big deal to some, but R'nar had been looking forward to getting their real riding gear since the day he Impressed to Iorath. Since their first flights were later in the sevenday, it was finally deemed time for them to receive the gear that they would be wearing.
There was nothing special or ceremonial about receiving the gear, it was laid and sorted in piles on a long table but the Headwoman seemed to know which pile belonged to whom since she had taken their sizes and measurements a fortnight prior.
The gear wasn't identical, and R'nar assumed that some of it was probably recycled from things that had been outgrown, but it did seem that in every pile one piece of the gear was brand new- the riding jacket.
"R'nar," Chaysea called his name and handed him a folded stack of black, leather gear, "treat it well. The first set is free, the second requires some marks."
"Yes ma'am." R'nar tucked the items carefully under his arm and left the line of Weyrlings that were still waiting. R'nar didn't even wait to see what A'vel got, instead he hurriedly retreated to his weyr, which was along the outskirts of the Weyr and far away from the Weyrbowl as he had requested.
His hands trembled from excitement as he laid the items out on his bed. First, the riding helmet. It's hard surface had a few scuffs on it, evidence that it had been worn before, but still in good condition. He wondered for a moment what had happened to its previous owner, but decided it best not to dwell on that line of thought.
Next he set out the riding boots, leathers, belt, and gloves. The belt was a high-polished glossy black that matched the second-hand boots. The gloves were made of wherhide, and not as obsidian as the other items in his pile, they looked to be dyed a dark gray.
The last thing he laid out was the leather, riding jacket. Reverently he ran his fingers over the Dolphin Cove insignia that was already stitched to one side. This one article of clothing said to the world that he was a dragonrider.
Excitement coursed through him as he shed his every day work clothing and carefully put on each piece of the riding gear that had been given to him. It all fit. The boots were stiff and would take some breaking in, and the fresh smell of new leather was intoxicating.
Stepping in front of his mirror, R'nar let out a low whistle of appreciation for the gear. All black, just as he preferred. He had been nervous of getting brown gear, or some ugly shade of tan. Even though he'd been with Iorath for months now, as he looked into the mirror, for the first time he truly felt like a Dragonrider of Pern.
