K'sedel

It was that kind of heart stopping moment that only occurs when you wake up
from a real, genuine nightmare. The former Weyrleader's heart was pounding
still, and his breath was short for a few moments. Looking to his side, he
realized his weyrmate wasn't there, perhaps she'd gone to check on the baby.
He wiped his forehead with the back of his hand, and took a deep breath reliving what had just happened in his dream.

~*~

"You're a fool," he said to the Weyrwoman. "Not only that, you're thoughtless, reckless and irresponsible." The time had to be shortly after the flight where she'd run outside into the sun without a stitch on. Most riders of female dragons learned to predict their cycles after the first few times and learned to keep something handy, a ratty old tunic, a simple dress that could be slipped over the head, or even just a robe.

He was aware of the story of the goldrider at Igen(tm) in the last pass who
had once gone out to the feeding fens in only a damp towel, but she'd been
very young, and it had been the dragon's first flight, something that the
girl had never been allowed to forget. But they had said she had gone one to
become a steady, well respected Weyrwoman at High Reaches (tm).

"Do you know what the rumours are like here? Never mind across the rest of
the continent?" demanded K'sedel. "We're a laughing stock, a place where
people thing we're completely out of control."

The day had been hot, not that hot weather was unusual for this part of
Pern, but most people knew to cover up in the heat of the day. While riders and weyrfolk in general were casual about nudity when it came to bathing,
or swimming, there was a time and a place for it. "You've put yourself out
of commission with that burn. For Faranth's sake you could have killed
yourself with heat stroke. And then what would we have done. Would your
dragon have stayed here without you to let her eggs hatch, or would we have
potentially lost a clutch during a pass." He paused in the rant briefly.

"I shouldn't have to lecture you like a junior weyrling pulling pranks.
You're a leader, and you need to act like one," stated K'sedel. "Pull
yourself together, this isn't a game, there are young riders who look up to
you here and at the other weyrs because of your dragon and those knots you
wear. Let alone the how impressed some of the outlying holds are with a
goldrider. Do you want them to laugh at you? Especially in those places that
think Weyrs are full of people with loose morals?"

At the point in time where words seemed to stop making sense, K'sedel began
to realize that they weren't in the privacy of his office, or even the
council rooms. This, was the most public place he could have picked, the
dining caverns at the evening meal. And people were going quiet, realizing
that the Weyrwoman was being given a very public tongue lashing from an
incredibly unhappy, and unimpressed Weyrleader.

There were some murmurs at his apparent command of language, and the fact
that it seemed genuine.

As the Weyrwoman took a step towards him, a glass of water in hand, its
contents were let fly.

~*~

The feel of the water had been what had woken him. in fact he hadn't done
anything of the sort after that flight, and had just been relieve that once
again Nikornath had been chosen, confirming his tenure for a few more
months. Had it been real, well he dreaded to think what might have happened
to the Weyr. Just as well it was all a nightmare.
