This morning when he woke he knew it was a beautiful day. Weather was
perfect except for wind. Wind and Thread. Wind and Thread, and Timing
exhaustion.
He ate and prepared like normal but in a fog he just couldn't seem to
shake. Check the straps, check the gear. Run the formations through
his head and listen to N'vanik give last minute instructions. All like
he was in the midst of a dream.
He was airborne without the memory of having gotten there. He'd seen
the looks his friend had given him but only indifferently responded.
"I'm fine," he'd said when he knew he wasn't fine. Not really.
Wind. Wind and Thread. Wind and Thread, and Timing exhaustion.
He fell into the normal rhythm while Mnoranth fought Thread without
any effects to his own abilities. Stone fed into the waiting maw when
it turned to him to refuel and he just settled in to tough it out. He
watched his side of the flight and shouted warnings here and there as
needed.
All in all he was feeling a little better and adjusted in his seat
flexing his shoulders to ease the tension. Then it happened.
Wind. Wind and Thread. Wind and Thread, and Timing exhaustion.
A wind gust blew a green into his path, as single missed strand of
thread landed exactly in the wrong place and severed a strap. Mnoranth
swerved to avoid the collision and the strap gave way. Timing exhaustion
made R'enh slow to realize what was happening and before he could grab
at Mnoranth's neck ridge to stay in place he was falling.
Mnoranth flicked /between/ to rid himself of the thread at the same
moment but without R'enh. The bronzerider watched the sky as he
plummeted. He was
curiously numb as his bronze's scream filled his mind.
}:Mine falls!:{
}:We respond,:{ Riyanth replied immediately to Mnoranth and to the
other queens, aware of the bronze's distress. It was the job of queens
to sweep up the last bits of Thread and to respond to emergencies.
Usually that meant catching falling dragons - that thought gave the
gold faint distress and she didn't know why - but falling riders were
also part of their job.
The gold's eyes spotted the falling rider and she calculated how he
was falling, where the Threads were now and where she could safely
intercept. Neither dragon or rirder wanted to wait for him to descend
down to the queen's level, it was too dangerous.
With Kapera's direction she went /between/. Three breaths later they
emerged below him, spreading her wings to catch the air and position
herself correctly. Kapera reached upwards towards the falling rider,
ready to grab him and pull him safely adragonback.
R'enh felt mild curiosity before the panic hit him like a sudden
collision with a wall. But then almost simultaneously a searing pain
bit his shoulder and he screamed. Mnoranth wasn't there to take him
/between/ but someone was. He twisted around in the air to look below and
saw gold salvation. His hands scrabbled for purchase on the massive
flank as he caught the strap and the rest of his body fell half on half
off the wingsail.
"I'm scored," he gasped as he clung.
Kapera glanced over to confirm that R'enh caught on and clung to a
strap. "We have you. We're going /between/," she yelled.
}:We take him back,:{ Riyanth informed Mnoranth as she went /between/
back to Dolphin Cove.
**If there's any Thread still on him, it'll be frozen,** she hoped
while they were in the endless cold. She didn't want to be the person
responsible for getting the Weyrsecond killed.
The gold emerged dangerously low in the Weyrbowl very close to where
the Healer's camps were. As soon as her dragon's feet were on the
ground, Kapera unstrapped herself and slid down Riyanth's foreleg. The
gold had tilted her wing to get R'enh closer to the ground.
"We need a Healer here!" she screamed as she ran to the wounded bronzerider.
R'enh let go and slid almost gently onto Riyanth's wing and then hands
grabbed him and he lost consciousness.
Healers shifted him to a stretcher while professional hands ran over
him to find the injury on his shoulder. It appeared superficial but
they doused it with a bucket of seawater just to be sure the thread
hadn't buried into his flesh. Then the healer nodded and the bearers
ran him full tilt into the infirmary
"Thank you Weyrwoman," the man nodded. He turned and ran after the
stretcher bearers.
}:Mnoranth, a dragonhealer comes to see to you,:{ Riyanth told the
bronze dragon. His concern over his rider was so strong that she
couldn't tell if any of it was his own pain. }:And the healers have
come for your rider. Stay with him and give him strength.:{ Unlike her
rider, she was calm and reassuring, projecting her assurance to
strengthen the bronze.
Kapera hated to leave like this, not knowing how R'enh was going to
be. But she and Riyanth would be needed back in the Queen's Wing,
ready to handle anything else that cropped up.
**Please nothing else. Nothing like this,** she thought.
Mnoranth peered into the cave where his rider lay and his tail
twitched back and forth as he waited.
