"Can I come in?" Royah knocked on the door of his sister's room. "I
don't want to interrupt if you're in the middle of something."
"Of course," Benani rose from her chair with a welcoming smile. Camnae
padded over from the hearth to give Royah a good sniff then wagged her
tail and followed him into the room.
Royah held his hand out the the canine, knowing it was better to let
her have some attention now, than to have her begging for it later on.
"How are you doing?" he asked.
"Oh probably about as well as anyone could expect under the
circumstances. I just want them to find Zathris." She shrugged and
crossed the room to give him a welcoming hug.
He hugged her back, after the last turn or so he felt she deserved
more than this. "I know you better than that, you can talk to me
about it, right? It'll stay between us."
"I know," she looked seriously in to his eyes for a moment. "I'm
beginning to feel the pressure from the powers that be to admit we
may have lost Zathris." She shook her head. "It's overwhelming at
times but I think he's still out there."
"You just know," he said. "If anything were to happen to Tenia or the
kids, I'd know."
"Yes," she agreed. "Like that." She stepped away from him after a
moment and looked out the window. "You know what I think? I think
Etheris would like to get his fingers in this bubbly and I just won't
let that happen." She turned back to look at Royah seriously.
"What do you think of one of Zathan's uncles as Warder until he's of
age?" She knew that would be a very big question.
"That bubbly is probably better with you," Royah said as he pondered
the question. "I suppose Royan would be the logical choice, he is the
oldest of us all, or Benaran maybe."
She couldn't help the chuckle. "So not you then,"
"I figure if our father had really trusted me, you wouldn't have those
Lady Holder knots."
"Royah," she shook her head almost embarrassed. "It doesn't matter
what our father wanted or thought at this point. I trust you to do
what is best for the Hold and my children. If I can say that
truthfully to the conclave. They will have no choice but to support
your claim." She tilted her head with a small smile. "Unless you don't
want the job." She knew he had his own interests, his own work.
"Are you sure you want me to look out for your boys? I mean I'd do my
best for them. like they were my own."
She smiled softly at her brother. "Royah, you were our father's
assistant. If anyone living here right now knows how to run this Hold
it's you. I trust you to look after the boys and their inheritance
should Zathris not be found. Yusanis hasn't been here long enough to
know how we do things at Amber Hills." Her emotions threatened to come
to the fore but she roughly pushed them down.
"I've thought about this and though we never discussed it, I'm pretty
sure Zathris would agree with me. I know you will do what is right for
our family and the Hold."
Her eyes dropped to the floor and made the decision to say what she
really felt. "I love all my big brothers. Royan would also be a good
choice as would Benaran, Benamil could do it too, but I think you have
more experience. I want this done so none of the other Holders can
point to any lack or need for oversight to change my decision and give
my son's inheritance away."
Royah took a deep breath as he digested the meaning behind his sisters
words. They had really struck home. "If you want me, really, really
want this. then I'd be honoured."
She just smiled and stepped forward to hug him.
