Saibra had never been one of those women with a clockwork cycle so when three or four days had passed by with no sign of her monthly friend, she didn't let her hopes get too high that she and R'enh had finally succeeded in their goal of conceiving a child. She didn't even tell R'enh in the event that the red scourge decided to rear its head later than planned.

It wasn't until three solid sevendays had passed and the first bout of morning sickness left her kneeling by a chamber pot in her floor that Saibra finally allowed herself a moment of excitement. It seemed that the sacrifices R'enh had been making with his schedule had not been for nothing.

When the bout of sickness passed and she felt as though she could safely leave her weyr without accidentally puking on some random passerby, Saibra dressed, slung a scarf around her neck, and set out for the infirmary. She still wanted one more opinion on the matter before she told R'enh.

"Weyrwoman," Reiki was a short, stocky healer, with frizzy blonde hair and intelligent green eyes. She was most often the healer that Saibra preferred to see if she needed something. Saibra never had been a fan of the wizened, old male healers with their cold, wrinkled hands and watery eyes.

"Master Reiki, thank you for squeezing me into your schedule." Saibra said as she adjusted the gown she'd been given to wear and scooted back onto the examination table.

"That's a perk of being the Weyrwoman, isn't it?" Reiki tilted her heart-shaped face to the side, looking at Saibra in her matter-of-fact way.

"Aye, it is. One of many." Saibra laid back on the table and folded her hands across her stomach.

"Is this a product of that handsome bronzerider that's always visitin'?" Reiki asked as she washed her hands and began her examination.

"It is. He'll make good looking children, don't you think?"

Reiki's thin lips twisted into a bit of an amused smile, "I don't doubt it. Your last cycle was when?" She began calculating as Saibra responded. "Well then, you should be about eight sevendays along. Early yet. You'll want to stay out of /between/."

Saibra's smiled broadened, "Safe enough for me to tell the father?"

"I see no reason why not." Reiki turned around to wash her hands again as Saibra slipped off the table to dress again.

As Reiki got together some teas and other things to help with the morning sickness, Saibra debated how she should tell R'enh that she was pregnant. This was too important for a simple message to be sent, and she couldn't very well go to Dolphin Cove so she would just have to wait until R'enh visited again.

"Here you go, there's no need for me to tell you how to use this right?" Reiki said, handing Saibra the pouches.

"It's been a while since my last pregnancy, but I think I remember this part." Saibra grinned a little, she'd been sick her entire pregnancy with Kaibren. "Thank you, Reiki."

"You are welcome, and congratulations."

Leaving the infirmary, Saibra felt as if she were flying, until she blindly rounded a corner and collided with the last person on Pern she wanted to see-- K'yne. The herb pouches she had been carrying dropped to the floor in the impact.

"Oh," K'yne automatically reached out to stabilize the other person, his hands grabbing Saibra by the arms.

"Well? Let me go!" She snapped, her blue eyes crackling with irritation.

K'yne's hands immediately opened and he took a step back. "Easy, it was just a reflex." He regarded Saibra in the same way that he always had, liked a caged feline whose sharp claws could gouge out his eyes at any moment.

Bending, K'yne picked up the things that had been dropped to the floor, and as soon as he did it dawned on him. The constantly visiting bronzerider, the rumors going around about Saibra, these herbs that he'd seen his mother use countless times....

"You're pregnant." He blurted without thinking.

Saibra's eyes narrowed as she snatched the herbs out of the brownrider's hands. "It is none of your business. It doesn't have anything to do with you."

The words were a brutal reminder of how she really felt about him, even though he had loved her since he first laid eyes on her Turns ago. He still wasn't sure how they'd gone from friends to such volatile acquaintances.

"Does Kaibren know?" he asked.

"No, and I would appreciate if you wouldn't say anything, to anyone."

K'yne nodded slowly. He had envisioned, more than once, having a child with Saibra, it wasn't hard to do since he was the only father figure Kaibren had after K'fel's death.

"Well, congratulations." He said finally.

Saibra looked at him as if she were unsure of his motive for being so cordial. "Thank you... I should go."

"Right." K'yne stepped out of her way, and as soon as he did, Saibra darted passed, trying not to let her run in with her deceased weyrmate's brother dampen her spirits.
