Saibra waited patiently out on her ledge, sitting bundled up in a coat
and scarf. The hardest part of this baby-making, for her at least, was
staying in her weyr. She missed /betweening/ out to a hot beach
somewhere to meet R'enh, but /between/ and pregnancy didn't go well
together. Which left most of the strain on R'enh since he had to leave
Dolphin Cove at odd hours to come to Dragonsfall around his duties.
There were some days where Saibra would get up in the middle of the
night to receive the bronzerider, which made the time change a little
easier for him.
**This would be a lot easier if Dragonsfall wasn't located south of No
Man's Land.** She thought as her breath drifted out in smokey wisps.
Today had been long and full of threadfall, meetings, and visits to
the infirmary. So when he'd gotten the call from Saibra he'd still
been in the air and the middle of 'fall and unable to leave. He'd
simply sent a **Be there soon.** But 'soon' had come and long gone
before he was able to break away late in his day. But with the eight
hour time difference he figured he needed to time it back to get there
before she went to sleep. It wouldn't do for him to show up in the
middle of the late watch and hours late when they both wanted this
baby. So even knowing what it would do to him physically and the
dangers involved he did it. Again...
As he glided into the Weyr and answered the challenge of the watch
pair with a wave weariness like he hadn't experienced it before washed
over him. All the materials had told him this could happen when he was
two places at the same time but this was worse than before. But he
waived and smiled as he climbed down from his seat to wrap his arms
around the woman he loved. "Hi," he said to her hair.
Saibra had begun smiling the moment she saw the familiar bronze appear
in the air. R'enh never failed to lift her spirits. When she had first
met the bronzerider she had never anticipated how much she would come
to rely on him.
When he approached her arms slid automatically around him, breathing
in deeply the hint of sweetsand and leather. But, there was something
different about him tonight, she thought as she looked up into his
face. "Hey yourself. You look tired, more than usual, are you okay?"
"Nothing a little rest won't cure," he smiled and tried to slide past
the questioning eyes with a redirect. "Got any wine?"
"Of course." She said, leading the way into the weyr. Saibra wasn't
totally convinced that rest was all R'enh needed, but maybe it was
just the work of trying to be in two places and maintain his duties
that was making the difference.
He kept his hand on her back as he followed her into the weyr. This
simple contact and feeling was why he went out of his way and frankly
out of his time to make sure they had every chance of making the baby
they both wanted.
While he could feel the drain they had always been warned of and knew
staying here with her and wouldn't bring him the rest he needed until
he was back in the right time, it was worth it for the reward and the
feelings he experienced when he was with her.
"How are things going with K'reyel," he asked pleasantly.
"Good, very good, actually. Still, not my first choice," she looked at
him and winked, "but he's not a bad second." She poured them both a
glass of wine and took her usual seat on the couch.
"I'm glad to hear it," he smiled. He'd never been the jealous sort,
and it wasn't at all profitable for a dragonrider in any case. Perhaps
that was one of the reasons he found himself relaxed and able to enjoy
their relationship. With lower caverns women he'd always felt on guard
like they wanted something from him he could never give. Yet with
Saibra there was an unspoken understanding of their respective
positions that seemed to grant them a freedom to enjoy their time
together. They each respected the other and knew this special time she
was giving him was her choice. The choice she could make even if
Chioneth hadn't chosen Mnoranth like they'd both wished.
As he had from the beginning he found Saibra deeply intoxicating and
was happy to show her how much any time she wished. Now he as sat next
to her with his glass in his hand he not only drank the wine but also
her presence. His fingers found hers and he took a deep breath to let
all the tension of the day simply ooze away. "I'm also very glad to
see you."
Saibra gave his fingers an assuring squeeze, "I'm glad to see you too.
Although I hate to see the strain our arrangement is putting on you.
Maybe after tonight we should take a couple of sevendays off so you
can rest?" As much as she looked forward to each of his visits, she
worried about putting him at risk.
"I'll be fine," he said automatically. "Once you catch I can take a
few days. Alright?" He smiled his crooked smile and winked.
"Has anyone ever told you that you are stubborn?" She returned his
smile, the one that always sent a shiver down her spine.
"Mmhmm, but that's a good thing right?" He leaned in to taste her lips
and even though the weariness in his bones was still there, desire
flared and it faded into the background.
Saibra smiled against his lips. Yes, it was a good thing, she decided.
She knew that it took a stubborn man to be able to put up with her for
any length of time. "A very good thing." She agreed.
