Relik had come solo, leaving his wife and children back at the Hall. Kaphrad was minding things so he didn't seem overly worried. The hatching had certainly started out strange. The old seacrafter had noted the anxiety on the weyrfolk's faces but there was nothing he could do so he'd stayed back holding a mug of ale and waited, chatting with a miner he'd known from turns back.
The whole thing had eventually happened and they had moved back for the feast. He'd had a few apprentices searched that had Stood and maybe a few of them had Impressed. That was the way of it. Walking through the crowd, he said his bit to the Weyrleaders then he saw a face he'd need to greet. Putting his hand on the Lord Holder's shoulder, he came up behind Bryvin. "Ho there."
Bryvin recognized the voice and smiled as he turned. He had his public face on and nothing slipped through when he was greeting holders and weyrfolk. "Hello Relik," he turned and put out his hand to take the Hallmaster's warmly.
"So how about the hatching eh?" He had seen a lot of things over the turns but this had been a first. Then again before now he had only been to so many hatchings at a Weyr. The feast looked good even though the Weyrwoman looked a bit tired.
"Pretty exciting," Bryvin nodded. "I didn't know if she was going to let us in!"
"No and there were a few nervous looks on the weyrfolk's faces if I miss my guess. All's well though. Had a few lads impress so that's well and good. The food seems to be well done, made up some of your tithe I'm guessing." Relik was actually affable and off his guard for once. The party mood was hard to suppress. And it was a good opportunity to speak to people.
"There sure were," he returned the smile. Bryvin lifted a glass of decent red wine to his lips. "In no small measure," he agreed. "But this is what it's for and it reflects well on both River Bluff and Sunstone as well. Don't you think?"
"Good reflections..." Relik looked around once more. "How is your Lady faring? I hear she's casting a rather large reflection these days. Well done for you. Hopefully it'll be a good strong lad. Might need to learn a bit of seamanship before he takes the reins of a Seahold someday eh?" That was an interesting idea that Relik had. Granted he didn't know if Bryvin himself knew much about the Hold's principal craft in practice.
"Thank you," Bryvin nodded acknowledging the good wishes. "I spent some time at sea when I was a young man," he smiled. He wasn't sure he wanted to quite reveal the source of his 'experience' but it had been an education. That much was certain. "I'm sure my son will need to learn quite a few things once he's out of nappy's," Bryvin grinned.
"Ahh did you? How many turns and on which lady did you serve?" Relik would have known most of the craft on the water in those days. He was trying to think if he had ever heard of Bryvin, but didn't think so.
"Well," he said with a moment's hesitation. "She wasn't exactly legal and I wasn't on her by choice. So I got off the first chance I got," he half smiled.
"Hmm well then. You've had a more colorful experience than some. Sometimes you learn more that way. Smart idea jumping ship though. Most of those ventures never end well." He'd seen many unregistered ships running cargo unaccounted for or even people unaccounted for. And some of them didn't treat the people they dealt with very well. "I'll be sailing back tomorrow. If you feel like a longer trip home than flying, feel free."
"I think I'd like that," Bryvin smiled at the Hallmaster. His time on the sea had been hard and painful but now things were different and he could enjoy the experience.
