K'ran

Because of the post-flight lassitude plus the Weyr tour, It was after
dark by the time K'ran and Rogueth were back at Dragonsfall. He made a
quick pit stop to take care of a few necessaries, then left his weyr.
**Can you talk to the Weyrleader's bronze, get a meeting?**

**This was going to be an interesting conversation**, he thought with
a sinking feeling. There were the obvious problems, and then personal
considerations, since the Weyrleader of Dragonsfall had been a River
Bluff resident not that long ago.

}:Erdenth. My rider wishes to speak with yours,:{ Rogueth said. The
bronze dragon's tone was assured. His rider might have concerns about
all that had happened, but the dragon did not.

}:My rider says five minutes, he's with his little one,:{ replied Erdenth
after a moment.

}:I will tell mine. The office?:{ asked the bronze

}:He says so,:{ replied Erdenth.

K'ran headed down to the Weyrleader's office, squaring his shoulders
and trying to seem tall and confident, rather than nervous and
baffled, as he waited beside the door. He wondered how much
information was already flying around the Weyr, and if people had
already made their judgements about what happened. Dragons made the
passing of gossip go so much quicker, after all. He remembered how
fast gossip had spread about some prior Weyrleader changes.

"The door's open." K'reyel called as he heard footsteps outside.

K'ran pushed it open and stood at attention when he came inside the
door, relying on formality to mask the nerves he was feeling.
"Weyrleader. I have some news to report."

Even though he had a good idea what was coming next, K'reyel knew it was
best to let him use his own words. "Sit," the Dragonsfall Weyrleader
gestured to a chair.

K'ran settled into the chair and folded his hands before speaking up.
He decided to stick to the facts first. "I arrived at River Bluff
today because I'd volunteered to help transport some crafters and
residents who wanted to assist the rebuilding efforts in the
territory, since some of them were from there. Shortly after I
unloaded my passengers, Orlaith Rose and Rogueth went after her and
won. It was entirely unexpected and I should have controlled him
better."

K'reyel inhaled, then exhaled sharply. "Not quite what I was expecting to
hear, but the dragon gossip had already begun to inform people, I expect
you'd realised that much."

"I suspected word had spread," K'ran confirmed. His foot began to tap
against the floor without him noticing. "I realize this is an
incredible inconvenience for both Weyrs."

"Well you do leave me needing another bronzerider," K'reyel said. "But I do
have to congratulate you, not every bronzerider makes it to the dizzy
heights of a weyrleadership."

"I do apologize for that much. For what it's worth, I have confidence
in D'ale handling Cyan until you find a replacement," K'ran said. He
believed strongly in supporting the wingsecond, who had been a huge
benefit to him when he was tapped to take over Cyan after the previous
Wingleader left.

K'reyel's last words mattered, too. The other man had won it recently
here, and once before. And he was familiar with River Bluff. "If you
have any advice about the location or the people, I'd love to hear it
any time."

"Perhaps after your first sevendays there, but I would suggest remembering
it's hot all turn around there, drills earlier or later in the day might be
something to note over the height of summer."

"Good to know," K'ran said. "It's certainly going to be an adjustment
to a new Weyr and a new job title. I'm just sorry I have to leave you
in the lurch so unexpectedly."

"Female dragons rise, a bronze who didn't try to join the chase..." K'reyel
allowed a grin to cross his face, "After all, I should know that."

"It's quite a rush. And though I know many will probably say I should
have pulled him away, bronze instinct is hard to beat." Maybe a brown
could have been controlled, but K'ran thought any bronze or goldrider
would understand just how hard stopping the imperative would be.

"Once they've blooded, I'd say it would be impossible to call them back."

"That's what I found," he agreed. There would still be talk, but
recriminating over it wouldn't change what had happened.

He tried to remember what obligations he'd have to discharge to this
Weyr before the transfer was complete. "I know I'll need my records,
and I'll need to move out of my weyr to free it up for a new resident.
I'll have to let D'ale know as well."

"If there are any outstanding wing reports, the next wingleader will
appreciate them."

"I'll have those left with D'ale, that way he knows where they are,"
K'ran promised.

"Then unless there's anything else..." K'reyel said.

"There isn't. It's been a pleasure flying with you and Erdenth,
Weyrleader," K'ran siad, standing and offering his arm in the
traditional salute.

"And with you, Weyrleader" K'reyel said as he also rose to return the
salute. "Clear skies at River Bluff."
