The Sands were just as hot as Ranar remembered them being the last handful of times he had Stood in the hopes of Impressing. They crunched and gave way beneath the soles of his shoes as he filed in behind the other white-robed Candidates.

Briefly he glanced up into the packed Sands, which had come alive with cheers for the Candidates. It didn't take him long to spot his father among the other "special" guests that were seated near the front of the stands. As a Weyrleader he earned a special seat. Personally, Ranar was just surprised that he was even there, and by the bored expression on his face, his father clearly didn't expect the outcome of the evening to be any different for his son.

Gritting his teeth, Ranar tore his eyes from his father and looked ahead at his mother's gleaming, lifemate, Panitath, who towered over the eggs that she protected. He could recognize Panitath from a lineup of golds, he was sure, he could remember playing and hiding under her wings when he was a kid. Still, he had no doubt he would get a snarl of displeasure from her should he make any wrong moves on the Sands.

As instructed, the Candidates spread into a loose semi-circle around the eggs, and for a moment the crowd behind them grew silent as the hum of the dragons became nearly deafening. And then suddenly everything went silent as an egg cracked.

A gasp rippled through the crowd as a bronze snout poked through the shell, followed by a thick, bronze body. Cheers soon filled the Hatching Cavern again as the Weyr celebrated the good omen that came with a bronze appearing first.

Ranar watched the dragonet, his brows drawn and furrowed as he watched the creature step toward the semi-circle of Candidates. His entire body tensed, his hands clenching into fists as he stood his ground. Like any Candidate who had stood before, Ranar was prepared to get out of the way quickly, because he had seen firsthand what it looked like to be mauled by a clumsy dragonet.

The dragonet didn't rush forward, however, he moved slowly, deliberately, his whirling eyes boring into Ranar's dark brown orbs.

**Please, please, please.** Ranar chanted to himself, hardly letting himself hope that the bronze dragonet was coming for him.

}:Please what?:{ The voice washed over him in a feeling that Ranar would never be able to properly describe.

The moment of Impression felt more powerful than anyone had ever described to him. How did one put to words the way it felt as their soul melded with another?

**Iorath.** The name came to him as easily as his mother's, as if it was something that had always been hidden inside him, just waiting to be awakened.

}:Yes? Are you ready to go feed me?:{ Iorath asked quizzically, his own voice very similar to Ranar's.

R'nar looked up and briefly locked eyes with his mother across the Sands. He could see happiness on her face, and what he thought was a hint of pride. The feeling made his chest expand a bit, but the feeling was quickly deflated when he looked up into the stands to see that his father was even't looking in his direction.

He'd _missed_ it? After all these Turns, and all those talks about "following" in his father's footsteps, and N'lon hadn't even been _looking_?!

}:What? What is it?:{ Iorath tilted his head before swinging it from side to side to look around and see what was distressing his rider.

"It's nothing." R'nar gritted as he led Iorath to the exit. "Let's get you something to eat." Iorath was all that mattered now anyway. He was just glad that he had Impressed at Dolphin Cove, where his family was, at least he would have his mother's support, if nothing else.
