"So Orlaith should rise soon," L'airev remarked. He sipped his wine and regarded the cards in his hands.
"Yes, should be interesting. I wonder when Anaeryth's first will be," U'das replied and studied his own hand with a frown on his face. He wasn't very good player, he could never hide his emotions behind a pokerface.
L'airev wasn't playing very seriously, it was merely nice to enjoy a few drinks and a hand or two. "How is her rider progressing?" He didn't take much time to follow weyrlings, but he was curious as to how the young gold was going.
"The usual way. She's very young and very different personality than Rhosyn or Lenala. Will be interesting to see what happens when she matures," U'das replied.
"Mmm. I'm sure she'll do fine. She has good role models." L'airev set his cards out on the table and sat back.
"Sure, she might drive _them_ crazy though," U'das grinned wickedly and put his own cards on the table.
"Oh, is she that bad?" L'airev knew Rhosyn didn't have the longest temper in the world, so it might not take much to push her too far.
"Let's just say she's a wild flower, where Lenala is garden flower and Rhosyn is...Rhosyn," U'das said.
"Just what we need, a wild goldrider." L'airev smirked.
"Refreshing," U'das agreed.
"That's not the word I was thinking of," L'airev admitted.
"So, what was the word?" U'das asked curiously.
"Concerning." L'airev shrugged. "'Wild' and 'gold dragon' are seldom words that go well together."
"Maybe," U'das shrugged. "I would give her Turn or two to mature before making any decisions," he said.
"Mmm." L'airev sipped his wine. "So what are your thoughts on riders transferring and getting rank?" It was a controversial topic, that was certain.
"Come on, that's happens all the time. People transfer to get a rank, especially bronzeriders. I've done it, when the northern Weyrs were re-opened," U'das said. "I left there, my aim on a Weyrleader's job."
"So you think it's all right to pass over the existing bronzeriders?" L'airev asked. "You don't think there are some worthy of promotion?"
"If they are so worthy, why aren't they promoted yet?" U'das was provoking a bit. "Familiarity breeds contempt? It's easy to over look someone you've know for a long time. You can't think of him doing anything else but what's he's been doing so far." He was speaking of experience. "And then there's the fresh blood, fresh ideas -thinking."
"You can have fresh ideas without giving a man a rank." L'airev replied. "Can you imagine the uproar from the golds if we decided to choose a new Weyrwoman and chose one from another Weyr?" He snorted. "Are you really suggesting that in a Weyr full of strong bronzes, there's not going to be a dozen worthy of leadership?" That seemed highly unlikely.
"Like that would ever happen," U'das said with amused sort. "Let's take a stock of River Bluff's bronzes. There's plenty of young ones, under 25, too young to hold ranks. Of those who are over 25, half already hold a rank, are craft-wise occupied like Y'gel or are too old like me," he continued. "And yes, we have capable bronzeriders still left. So, why haven't you applied? There's wingsecond's job free after K'reyel transferred and we need new Weyrlingmaster, again."
L'airev sipped his wine and shrugged. "I've thought about it," he admitted.
"So, what's keeping you from it?" U'das asked.
"Pride. If I was any good I'd be asked. Or I'd win a flight. Or…something."
"If you don't show any interest or initiative, they won't come to ask you. They presume you're happy as you are," U'das said.
"And asking too soon might be perceived as premature or arrogant." Timing was everything.
"Yep. It's out of the Fall and into the storm," U'das grinned.
L'airev nodded. "How did we even get on to this topic?" he asked. "How are your cards?"
"Not good," U'das grunted.
