Description: A letter comes from Harper Hall about some conflicting information.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 3, day 13 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Rethisa, Demir
"Sir?" The young Under Steward stood uncertainly in the doorway to the
Lord's office. The letter in his hand was curious to say the least and
he didn't have enough experience yet to wrap his mind around the
answer to their question. Since there was currently no Steward at
Amber Hills with the departure of Wirnan off to who knew where, he'd
been diligent in trying to solve these issues himself as had the
others working with him but there were times they needed a little
direction.
Zathris looked up from another letter, though that one had been given
directly to him without opening as it was direct communication from
the Lord of Topaz. Although not finished reading it, he put it aside
so he could focus on the under steward. "Yes?"
"I have this letter sir," he said stepping into the office and closer
to the desk. "It's from the Harper hall and they're asking if your
sister really got married here on the date we reported." He placed the
letter on the desk turning it to face Lord Zathris. "They say she was
reported dead sir, by your father."
"What? Let me see." Zathris extended his hand for the letter, a
frown marring his features. He scanned the contents and that frown
deepened. "Dead? What in the world is Ethris thinking?"
The young man didn't quite know what to say to that but he did have a
question. "Sir if she was reported dead before she married Holder
Demir, is she... are they really married?" It did seem to him to be a
technicality but a dead person could not get married, at least not on
Pern.
"Of course they are. You can't marry a dead person. Obviously, this
is a mistake and one that must be corrected immediately. Please write
the Harper Hall, indicate to them that Lord Ethris was completely
mistaken and Rethisa is alive." Zathris was not particularly fond of
his father, but to report her as dead? What provoked him to do so?
"Yes sir," Trellen nodded. "Right away sir. Should I also confirm that
she is, in fact, married to Holder Demir? I don't believe we've sent
off their daughter's birth notice as yet so I could include that too."
He was beginning to find his confidence and thinking the issue through
out loud as he did so.
"Indeed, do so. The sooner this matter is settled, the better." The
last thing Rethisa needed were more complications in her life.
Zathris shook her head. "Utter nonsense. Thank you for bringing it
to my attention."
"Yes sir," he nodded again and turned to leave but stepped back as
Lady Benani came through the door.
Benani nodded at the steward before he slipped out of the room behind
her. "Zathris," she smiled. "It's a beautiful day, want to join me for
a ride? Do you have the time?" She was already dressed in her riding
clothes with her faithful canine at her heels.
The sight of his wife brought a smile to his face. At her suggestion,
he nodded, and it didn't matter if he had time or not. To see her
riding again, more like herself before everything that had happened,
it was so good and right. "For you, I'll make time."
"Great," she smiled and came around the desk to walk into his arms for
a kiss. "I'll go tell the groom to bring Anil around for you while you
get changed."
"That sounds like an excellent idea."
