Saibra

Ever since Saibra had gone to visit Teseada with her newborn son, she'd had an incredible ache inside her, an ache that she felt only a baby could fill. Kaibren was now nine Turns old and becoming more independent every day. After K'fel had died she had never thought to have children again, after all, there wasn't anyone she could have imagined she would want to father her children.... Until now.

"R'enh," she said as they lay sprawled together on a beach enjoying the heat of the sun after a nice swim. She paused, searching for the right words. It wasn't so much that she was afraid of what R'enh would think if she asked him because he was the one person Saibra felt that she could really be herself with, but she was hesitant to admit what she wanted.

"Yes," he drawled and took his forearm off his eyes. The water had been warm and the sun felt good against his skin. He turned and propped his head on his hand and looked at her inquiringly.

There was another moment of hesitation as she looked at him, studying the features of his handsome face. "I have something to ask you. Before I ask, just know, if you think I'm crazy just say so, it won't hurt my feelings."

Well that didn't sound so good at first blush so R'enh tensed ever so slightly. His brows twitched together, "I don't think you're crazy Saibra."

"I've been thinking lately that I would like to have another baby," she spoke quickly, wanting to get out her entire thought before R'enh had a chance to react, "and well, you're the only person I would like to do that with..... Think I'm crazy yet?"

"Me?" He didn't think before that first word escaped.

Saibra's smile faded from her eyes and she shrugged her shoulders. "It was just a crazy thought, like I said. Forget I said anything." Even though she had tried to set herself up for this moment, for the rejection, it still stung nonetheless.

His mind spun at the thought. Most children in a Weyr were either an accident or a happy event for a pair of riders living together. From his knowledge of Saibra's past he knew she'd had her great love and her children by him were special and cherished. "Wait Saibra," he reached out to turn her face back to him. "It was the surprise that's all." He shook his head still trying to wrap his mind around the idea. "Planning a child when we aren't... well even living in the same time zone. How long have you been thinking about this?"

"A little while." She whispered in return, her expression and tone more closed off than before. What he said was true, they weren't even in the same place, and while it did not bother her at the moment that he slept with other women, how jealous would she feel when she was eight months pregnant and miserable? Ugly jealousy, that's what it would be. "I think seeing Teseada's baby made me realize that I would like to have another. I always assumed I would have more but..." She shook her head. "It's silly."

"No," he said and gathered her close. "It isn't silly." He could feel her stiffness and knew he hadn't quite said the right things. How could he tell her how honored he was that she would choose him to father a child when she could have just about anyone she wanted. It would tie them together in a way he'd not expected and he liked that idea. He had only one child that he knew for certain was his and Zorenh was almost a man at this point.

"Stop taking your teas sweetheart," he said softly into her ear.

Happiness blossomed on Saibra's face as her eyes flashed up to R'enh's, "You mean it?"

"I mean it," he smiled down at her. "I'd love to have a baby with you."

Stopping her teas also meant that Saibra would be putting a halt on who found their way to her bed. It would be only R'enh if she wanted to ensure he was the father of her child.... Strangely enough, the idea didn't bother her.

"Thank you, R'enh."

"No, thank you," he said and captured her lips.
