With the upcoming Hatching at River Bluff, Saibra wanted to be sure that
she and K'reyel presented a new united front for Dragonsfall. There was
always speculation about the stability of leadership when a Weyrleader
changed, but Saibra wanted to send a clear, confident message that things
at Dragonsfall were going exactly as they should. To this end, the
Weyrwoman was curious to know if K'reyel would be taking his weyrmate as
well, or if it would just be the two of them attending, because of if so,
she wanted to coordinate what she was wearing to match her new Weyrleader.
Picking up the swatches of cloth that had been sent up to her by the
seamstress, Saibra walked over to the Weyrleader's office.
"K'reyel, I was wondering -" she stopped short when she looked up and saw
that it wasn't K'reyel in the office, but G'nir. The box on the desk told
her that he must still be packing things. She had assumed that everything
had already been cleaned out.
"Oh! G'nir."
"Saibra," G'nir awknowledged her presense with a cold voice. "I'm just
finishing this," he said and gestured towards the box.
Saibra's right eyebrow arched at the tone of the man's voice. It's not like
the flight was her fault. "I see. How are you doing?" she asked, for the
sake of being polite.
"Why do you care? You've barely said two words to me during the past
months," G'nir shot back.
Despite her best attempt to not be bothered by G'nir's quip, Saibra felt
the inevitable surge of anger building in the pit of her stomach. "That
goes both ways. You know where my weyr is too." she said.
"Yes, half of the Pern seems to have been there," G'nir was feeling nasty.
He was normally far more diplomatic. But today, he just wanted to lash out.
"The only good thing is that at least your Dolphin Cove playboy didn't win.
K'reyel is well qualified and I can leave the Weyr to his hands with
peaceful mind."
The slur against R'enh made Saibra's patience snap. "I did try my best to
have my Dolphin Cove playboy, as you so aptly put it, win, but I felt that
was a better option than letting you win and running off to some other Weyr
like that damn Hygalia. This is the most passion you have shown about
anything since your precious Weyrwoman ran off and left you." She paused to
draw a breath before adding, "Now I see why she did."
Well, that hurt and left G'nir momentarilly speechless. "Oh, so it's all my
fault now?" G'nir retorted. He felt it was rather weak come-back but it was
best he could come up with. A part of him was feeling quilty. He realized
he didn't know much about Saibra or her past, was she weyrbrat or holdbred?
It was too late for that now. The guilt just darkned his mood further.
As much as Saibra wanted to fling back that it _was_ G'nir's fault, she
exhaled loudly instead and pressed her fingers to her temples, "No, it's
not all your fault. There's equal blame to be placed in the sorry excuse
for a working relationship that we had."
"We had such a promising start, what happened?" G'nir asked.
Saibra thought back to the night she had come over to G'nir's weyr to
"console" him after P'nal's death. She had shown up in a scandelously
revealing garment and he hadn't even taken notice. She rememebered the
feeling of her stung pride that evening as she had returned to her weyr.
For her that had been the turning point.
"I am not sure."
"For the Weyr's sake I do hope you and K'reyel get along better," G'nir
said, sounding like he didn't believe it was possible.
Saibra's chin lifted a little, "I guess time will tell but I believe we
will."
"Well, he has family so that gives you the freedom to do whatever you want
to. Not that nothing ever stoppped you," G'nir said.
"It certainly didn't stop you either." Saibra shot back.
"It never does," G'nir shrugged it off. He was man, that was acceptable
behavior for him.
"So it's okay for you, but not for me? What a hypocrite you are." Saibra
was beyond frustrated with G'nir, and now more than ever, thankful that
Chioneth had chosen differently. "Have a good day, G'nir, and good luck
with your new found freedom." Turning on her heel the Weyrwoman left,
deciding that she would find K'reyel elsewhere.
Like G'nir needed any more reminders for what a horrible person he was.
Self-loathing was so much fun.
