A'kades had heard weyr gossip about the birth of the Wingleader's daughter, and from Jadirah he'd heard that it had been rather stressful. So when he planned to stop in and check on K'lvin, he brought a bottle of wine, a flask of spirits, and the willingness to lend an open ear.

He knocked on the other man's door.

K'lvin , who had been poised over the hidework he'd missed while he'd taken some time off with Bahji and Kaliha, didn't even look up from his work as he called out, "Come in."

A'kades pushed the door open. "Got a few minutes to talk, or are you in hidework up to your ears? I hear you've had a busy sevenday."

"Come on in, I need a break." K'lvin motioned for A'kades to join him as he leaned back in his chair and rubbed his hands over his face.

A'kades took a seat and settled the bottles on the desk. "Lot of hidework?"

"Not exactly. The problem is I am so tired that it just makes the hidework take that much longer." K'lvin looked at the bottle of wine A'kades placed on the table. "Is that for sharing?"

"I trade custom beltwork to a vintner for the good stuff. It's for sharing now, and you can keep what's left if there is any." He hoped it would help.

K'lvin opened a desk drawer and pull out two glasses, "I was hoping you would say that." He set the glasses down on the table for them. "When your children were born were you there with the mother?"

"Jadirah threw me out for the first one. I was allowed in for the second one," the Second replied.

The Wingleader sighed, "I wasn't there for my first child's birth, shells, I didn't even _know_ I was having a kid until after she was born. Then with Bahji we always knew we were running a risk, but it was what she wanted.
After this time though, the healers told me another baby would kill her."

That was a tragedy to hear. For a couple that wanted more children, such news was devastating. "I'm sorry for that. How are you both feeling about it?"

"I haven't talked much about it with Bahji. We've just been focusing on Kaliha and I don't want to do anything to ruin this experience of motherhood for Bahji. I worry that Bahji won't take what the healer said seriously. She knew this time what the danger would be and still wanted to go through with it anyway." K'lvin poured some wine into his glass. "I have two daughters now, and I treasure them both. I would be content not having more children, especially at the risk of Bahji's life."

"That's a beautiful name for your daughter," A'kades said, thinking he should stop in and say hello - once the mother was better, of course.

As for what to do about the future, he wasn't sure how best to be comforting. "I hope she'll take their advice, especially if she has friends among them. It was one thing for her to try the odds this time, because the consequences might have been theoretical. But now that she's had the child and been through the experience, so perhaps that will settle her?"

"I hope so. Watching her nearly die in front of me is not something I ever want to repeat." K'lvin knew a certain way to guarantee that Bahji did not get pregnant, but that would be a tough road to follow. Still, he would
abstain if necessary to protect her.

"Indeed, it's horrifying to imagine something like that happening," A'kades said, taking a drink from his just-filled glass. "I wish the both of you the best with each other and your daughter. Despite the challenge,
it seems like you make each other happy."

K'lvin smiled a little for the first time since they had begun talking, "Yes, I suppose we do. We certainly were not even looking for one another when we met." He took a drink from his glass and shook his head.

"Enough about me. How are things with Lenala?"

"I didn't expect to be in a relationship with her," A'kades said honestly. "We had drinks together one night, I escorted her to Turnover, and then things have been progressing. I'm excited for our child as well."

"So you and Jadirah are not...." he gestured flicked his fingers.

"Neither of them are my weyrmate. Jadirah just wanted her children and nothing more. Lenala...I could see us growing to that point." He was certainly getting serious about her.

"It is a bit odd to have the mother of your children presiding over the pregnancy of your other woman, though," he admitted.

K'lvin barked out a little chuckle, "Yes, I would imagine that might get... interesting. At least you are on good terms with the mother of your children. Kylena's mother," he rolled his eyes and shook his head, "is a piece of work."

"That has to be frustrating," he said. "Did you get to see your daughter very often before you moved here with her?"

"Not as much. Every now and then Cylena would let me take her for a fortnight, and then I had to work around my own schedule as a wingrider." K'lvin was glad that now Kylena was living at River Bluff with him, and could actively be apart of the family that he and Bahji were creating.

"Sounds like it's better now. I'm always happy to see family life suiting a man." It was important to A'kades, even though a Weyr's definition differed from what he'd grown up with.

K'lvin nodded, "Yeah, it's much better now." He was also feeling better than he had when A'kades first knocked on the door. "Thanks for coming by, A'kades."

"No problem. Enjoy the rest of the wine. And if you ever want to get in on a game of cards, my weyr is open for the party," the other man said.
