N'vanik

N'vanik

Kenza thought that she had been a dragonrider long enough to recognize when her dragon's mood was affecting her own. It had been all too easy, though, to blame her growing irritability over the past days on the fight between U'kaiah and N'vanik and its aftermath.

The annoyance had grown to the breaking point by the time she finally realized what was going on, which was shortly before Solith launched herself skyward, bellowing challenge to the male dragons of the Weyr.

Kenza felt rather like screaming the same sort of challenge as she watched men gather around her, her eyes narrowed and calculating. Frustration had found its own sort of outlet in the emotions of the flight, but she didn't want to wake up next to some immature boy. **Find us someone worthy!**

Loseth roared, shifting his feet. "Some green catch your fancy?" N'vanik asked. He was already half drunk, moping around his weyr.

}:Solith will be mine!:{ the bronze declared.

N'vanik groaned. "Oh, you've got to be kidding!" The idea of a flight had suddenly lost its appeal.

The dragon growled. }:I am not kidding! I will catch her!:{ N'vanik knew better than to argue, so Loseth took him down to join the circle of men around the Wingthird, and the bronze joined the males in the sky.

}:Mine,:{ said the blue simply. }:She's mine.:{ D'nev looked at Shoglenth. **Who?**

}:Solith,:{ was the reply as the blue used his powerful legs to lift him into the air.

}:Solith rises.:{ Treadoryth informed his rider as if it was the first flight he had ever been interested in.

**I've heard. Do you want to chase?** D'wrayt asked curiously. Treadoryth usually wasn't one for chasing greens, but then the bronze wasn't mated to a senior queen at the moment.

}:I will catch her.:{ he said in reply. He didn't wait for his rider to leave his office before joining the males in their race for the green.

K'far hurried into the small group of men as his brown Torth took off to join the waiting browns and bronzes. **Who is the green again?** he asked as he eyed the woman in the middle of the circle possessively.

His brown mirrored his rider's feelings. }:Her name is Solith...:{
**You're gonna chase _who_?!** U'kaiah asked, his delight at a mating flight suddenly turning into a feeling of sour dread. **You're not going to _catch_ her, are you?** he asked as he slipped off the bronze's neck and looked into the crowd of men that had gathered around the greenrider. A strange mix of desire and discomfort arose in him as he watched Kenza. **It would be like catching my _foster mother_...**

}:I will not lose,:{ Kalamath said confidently.

**That's what I'm afraid of,** U'kaiah thought, already feeling rising desire... for Kenza...

Kenza closed her eyes as the circle around her constricted, not wanting to see the faces of young men who she could remember toddling around the Weyr in diapers. She knew that soon enough she wouldn't care who won their flight, as long as he could match her energy and passion.

And then she wasn't thinking at all, because Solith was in the sky, soaring above the chasing males. She had almost thirty turns of experience in outwitting arrogant bronzes and steady browns and even wily blues, and _no one_ would catch her unless she wanted them to.

D'nev was one with Shoglenth, soaring with him as he chased the green.
Shoglenth would win, the lovely enticing prize would be his.

D'wrayt let his bronze's desire for Solith flow throughout his body as he slowly became one with Treadoryth. It was a good escape from the day to day activities of running the Weyr. Treadoryth used his strengths to his advantage and paced himself so he wouldn't tire before she decided to be caught.

Xmrenth had joined the chase late and K'lvin's lake of real interest was affecting his performance. The green was far ahead with even blues before the bronze. Realizing he stood no chance of winning this flight he spiraled toward the ground, grumbling with frustration.

Loseth had no such hindrance from his rider. N'vanik no longer cared whose green it was. Winning was the only thing that mattered. Winning, and the release it would bring. His bronze moved up in the pack, his single-minded lust reinforced. He _must_ have her.

The part of U'kaiah that was still himself in the dragon-rider bond whispered **But it's _Kenza_! Let N'vanik have her. He deserves her!**
even as his hands reached out to caress the greenrider. The bronzerider shuddered in a strange mix of intense desire and aversion.

Kenza was oblivious to all of it, the touching hands, the confusion and lust and emotion... everything but Solith, who dropped into a sudden dive and flew tauntingly close to the closest of her suitors in a teasing challenge to catch her. And one of them did, so swiftly that Kenza gasped on the ground as arms wrapped around her and pulled her into oblivion.
