F'lin took a deep breath and tugged at the hem of his tunic one last time to straighten it. Then he knocked on the Weyrleader's door. Maybe this whole meeting would be a bad idea, but it never hurt to try. Did it? **I should have run this past Grandmother first!** came the thought, for the thousandth time. But that also came with risks.
Besides, it was the beginning of the new Turn. What better time to start something new.
"Come," K'sedel called. Whatever the distraction, it would be a welcome one. Between the hidework, and a new baby, the Weyrleader was tired.
"Hi, K'sedel." F'lin stepped inside with a smile. "Do you have a moment?"
"Certainly," he replied, wondering what would bring the young man here.
"Great." The young bronzerider looked relieved as he closed the door and crossed the office to sit across from K'sedel. "All right. So, I have the seed of an idea that I'd like to plant with you. Please just hear me out, and I certainly don't expect an answer now. It's just something that I'd like you to consider."
"Okay," K'sedel gestured to him to continue, wondering what he had to say.
"All right." F'lin flashed the older bronzerider a cocky grin, even though he was nervous. "I want you to consider me for the Wingsecond position. Wait--" he held up a hand to forestall anything K'sedel might have to say. "I know both Seneth and I are young, but we have four turns of experience in the air. We are a strong pair. More than that, I want to learn how to lead a Weyr and I want to learn it from you. You and my grandmother guided River Bluff well and I learned a lot from her before she retired and I want to continue that education. So... I just wanted to ask you to consider me, that's all."
Brave words, thought K'sedel. Brave indeed. "Your grandmother put you up to this?" he asked after a moment, K'sedel thought that perhaps her could hear her echo in F'lin's tone and choice of wording. "Or was it your own choice to consider asking?"
"Mine. I haven't spoken with her about it." And it stung a little that K'sedel would think that he'd be that easy to manipulate - or that Tsaera would try. On him, anyway. "This is something _I_ want. And if I've learned anything, it's that things that you want don't happen if you don't do anything to make them happen."
"I had to ask," K'sedel said. "Your grandmother has a few very definite ideas about how a Weyr should be run, and I need to to know my second is his own man."
F'lin nodded, suddenly feeling hopeful again. "Everyone has definite ideas about how a Weyr should be run. I have a pretty good idea about what she thought, but I want to learn what _you_ think." And then someday, apply everything he'd picked up over the Turns in his own way.
"How about we give it a trial? Say for one month and then we'll review it?"
F'lin blinked. "Wait-- really?"
"Really, but I expect you to give it your best shot, and tell me if you don't think you're ready after a sevenday or so."
"As is if I would do anything less." F'lin grinned, feeling cocky again. This wasn't supposed to work -- he was supposed to walk in, have K'sedel think about it, and then end up picking someone with more experience-- but the move would set him up for the next position that opened. The young bronzerider couldn't believe his good fortune. A Wingsecond's knots! "When do you want me to start? Tomorrow? Or... I could start now. That's a lot of hidework you've got there."
"Tomorrow will be soon enough." K'sedel could see the enthusiasm, but he wanted the youngster to have time to consider the impact of his choices.
"Sure. Tomorrow then. I'm assuming that you'll want to talk before drills. How early should I come by?"
"Lets see," K'sedel checked the chart by his desk. "Drills are at the 10th candlemark, so, meet me here about half a candlemark before then."
"I'll be there." And there was nothing on Pern - not Thread, fire, or even hurricane - that would keep him away.
